Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk Meets PM Narendra Modi in New York, Confirms India Expansion

Tesla CEO Elon Musk had the chance to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York during his state visit to the US On the 20th Of Jun 2023. The meeting demonstrated Musk’s respect for Modi as the Tesla CEO spoke warmly of the prime minister and recalled Modi’s earlier visit to a Tesla facility in California.  

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced on Wednesday that he was incredibly excited about India’s future and that it had more to offer the world than any other Major nation. Musk’s compliments came during what he called a great conversation with prime minister Narendra Modi. He emphasized that the PM “really cares about India” and that he had spoken strongly about Tesla, inc. Investing in the nation.   

Elon Musk told reporters after the meeting with Modi that he is eager to make investment in India. Musk emphasized his intention to personally visit India in 2024 and gave reporters the assurance that Tesla would undoubtedly be present in that nation. Tesla Will launch in India as soon as it is humanly possible, according to Musk.   

During his press conference, Musk added that they also discussed SpaceX and that he plans to expand Starlink satellite internet service to India.  

Elon Musk’s Ongoing Pursuit of Expansion in India: The Roadblocks and New Developments  

Musk’s business venture into India has been in the works for a long time now. The CEO of Tesla stated in 2017 that the company intended to begin selling vehicles in India as early as that Summer. However, Tesla’s efforts to convince the local Government to agree to reduce import duties have caused a halt in that plan. Musk stated in a Tweet from 2021 that Tesla was interested in expanding into India, but import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country. Tesla had requested a trimming in the taxes, but the Indian government apparently wants the business to manufacture their cars in India before considering any tax discounts.   

Late in 2021, Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, registered its operation in India and engaged a senior executive to oversee operations there.    

The CEO employed by Starlink India, Sanjay Bhargava, resigned a few weeks later. However, after the Indian government instructed the SpaceX company to cease taking orders for the products because it lacked the authorization to do business in the South Asian region.    

But on 20 June 2023, while speaking with reporters after having a conversation with PM. Modi, Musk said that they are going to start Starlink in India Soon. But Musk did not provide a precise delivery date for Starlink in India.
