Musk’s business venture into India has been in the works for a long time now. The CEO of Tesla stated in 2017 that the company intended to begin selling vehicles in India as early as that Summer. However, Tesla’s efforts to convince the local Government to agree to reduce import duties have caused a halt in that plan. Musk stated in a Tweet from 2021 that Tesla was interested in expanding into India, but import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country. Tesla had requested a trimming in the taxes, but the Indian government apparently wants the business to manufacture their cars in India before considering any tax discounts.

Late in 2021, Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, registered its operation in India and engaged a senior executive to oversee operations there.

The CEO employed by Starlink India, Sanjay Bhargava, resigned a few weeks later. However, after the Indian government instructed the SpaceX company to cease taking orders for the products because it lacked the authorization to do business in the South Asian region.

But on 20 June 2023, while speaking with reporters after having a conversation with PM. Modi, Musk said that they are going to start Starlink in India Soon. But Musk did not provide a precise delivery date for Starlink in India.

Musk is still committed to bringing Tesla vehicles to India, despite the difficulties that the company’s ambitions to join the Indian market have encountered due to import taxes.
