OpenAI has introduced o3pro, a new and more powerful version of its o3 AI model. This model is now available to ChatGPT Pro and Team users. OpenAI says o3pro is its best reasoning model so far. The launch was first reported by Yahoo Finance.
O3pro takes the place of the older o1pro model for Pro users. It is also available through OpenAI’s API, and Enterprise and Education users will get access next week. According to OpenAI, o3pro works much better than earlier models in subjects like science, math, writing, and coding because it can think step by step.
Unlike regular AI models, o3pro is designed to solve problems carefully and logically. It doesn’t just guess answers quickly; it works through each step to give better results. This makes it more accurate in complex topics like physics, computer programming, and data analysis.
OpenAI said, “In expert evaluations, reviewers consistently prefer o3pro over o3 in every tested category,” including science, education, and writing. Experts also said o3pro gives clearer, more complete answers and follows instructions better.
O3pro comes with useful tools built in. It can search the internet, understand images, look at files like PDFs, run Python code, and remember past conversations to give more personalized answers. These tools make it helpful for people doing detailed work, not just simple chats.
In OpenAI’s own testing, o3pro scored better than Google’s top AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, on a math test called AIME 2024. It also beat Anthropic’s Claude 4 Opus on a science test for PhD-level questions. These results show that o3pro is one of the best models available right now.
However, o3pro is slower than the earlier o1pro model. Because it takes more time to reason and think through answers, users may notice a short delay in getting responses. OpenAI suggests using this model for tasks that need careful thinking and where accuracy matters more than speed.
O3pro is already available for ChatGPT Pro and Team users. It will be available for Enterprise and Education users next week. Developers can also start using it through the OpenAI API right away.
The API pricing is higher than usual, costing $20 per million input tokens and $80 per million output tokens. Input tokens are the words or content users type in, and output tokens are the words the AI gives back. To get an idea of the size, a million input tokens is roughly equal to 750,000 words, a little longer than the book War and Peace.
Even though o3pro is very advanced, it still has a few issues. Right now, temporary chats using this model are turned off due to a technical problem. It also cannot generate images, and it doesn’t work with OpenAI’s Canvas feature, which is used for creating and organizing longer projects in ChatGPT.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on X, “o3pro is really smart! I didn’t believe the win rates relative to o3 the first time I saw them.” He also said it’s great for important tasks that need reliable results, even if it takes more time to respond.
O3pro costs more and may respond a little slower, o3pro could be the right choice for professionals in science, education, business, and technology who value accuracy and depth over speed.
