Apple to Add AI Notification Labels to Fix False News Alerts
Apple is set to unveil an AI notification label to show users that notification summaries are AI generated. Apple AI notifications are useful to users, but they can be inaccurate, TechCrunch reported. Although they can be funny, the notifications can cause confusion. Apple’s AI feature is designed to summarize notifications on breaking news. However, the feature has generated false claims in some instances.
Inaccurate News
Apple’s AI feature has previously displayed inaccurate news alerts on the tech giant’s latest iPhones. In one notification, the feature displayed information that a man who was accused of killing a UnitedHealth insurance boss committed suicide by shooting himself. On another occasion, the notification claimed that Rafael Nadal, a tennis star, had gone public as gay.
The iPhone maker said that it’s developing an Apple AI notification label to give users clarity when the news displayed are summaries generated by Apple Intelligence. The company is set to roll out the new Apple notification update in the coming weeks.
“A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report a concern if they view an unexpected notification summary,” Apple spokesperson said in a statement.
Call for Withdrawal
In recent weeks, Apple has been asked to withdraw its AI feature for generating inaccurate news alerts. The tech giant’s decision to develop the Apple label notification comes weeks after the BBC filed a complaint on misrepresentation last month. The company took the action after false news alerts notifications with the BBC logo appeared on some iPhones.
“These AI summarisations by Apple do not reflect and – in some cases completely contradict – the original BBC content. It is critical that Apple urgently addresses these issues as the accuracy of our news is essential in maintaining trust,” the BBC said.
Apple AI’s fake news alerts have not affected the BBC only. In November last year, a journalist from ProPublica flagged an inaccurate notification summary from the New York Times. In the notification, Apple AI wrongly claimed that Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister had been arrested.
Apple’s AI notifications feature is among the new AI tools that the tech giant unveiled in its latest iPhone versions last month. The feature is part of Apple’s strategy to stand out in the highly competitive tech environment that has recently been characterized by generative AI deployment. The notification feature is available in iPhone 16, 15 Pro Max, and 15 Pro phones. It’s also available in some versions of Macs and iPads.
“Apple Intelligence features are in beta and we are continuously making improvements with the help of user feedback,” Apple stated in its response to BBC.

AI Generated Content Risks
Tech companies are struggling to address inaccuracies generated by AI systems. Last month, an investigation conducted by the news outlet, the Guardian found that ChatGPT search may be manipulated with hidden content and can return mischievous codes from the sites it craws.

Google also adds a disclosure statement to help users identify AI-generated images.
