Google Rolls Out AI Mode in Search for All U.S. Users at the I/O 2025 Reveal

At Google I/O 2025, the tech giant made an announcement about the launch of Google AI Mode for all U.S. users, as reported by Search Engine Land. With this update, search becomes more intelligent and interactive, shifting from simple keyword matching to deeply contextual and conversational answers. In this new update, a tab will appear below the search bar on Google.com and the search app for AI mode.

Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, said at the event that the Google AI mode would display results that are two to three times the length of traditional Google Searches, and sometimes even five times that length.

What Is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode brings a whole new way of searching via generative AI to deliver useful summaries, comparisons, and recommendations. Rather than navigating through dozens of links, users now get direct, well-structured answers specific to their queries.

The update extends to Google Overviews as well, a feature that has been available in Search to some users. Overviews give short, AI-powered answers right at the top of the search results. Now, with AI Mode fully live, the overviews are faster, more accurate, and applicable to a broader range of queries

In addition to that, users will also notice a fresh interface with Google’s new AI tab, allowing them to switch between normal results and those powered by AI. Whether you need product comparisons, travel planning advice, or a summary of a scientific subject, AI Mode delivers everything in one place.

Liz Reid, Google’s head of search, wrote, “Under the hood, Al Mode uses our query fan-out technique, breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf. This enables Search to dive deeper into the web than a traditional search on Google, helping you discover even more of what the web has to offer and find incredible, hyper-relevant content that matches your question.”

Powered by Gemini 2.5

One of the most important components of this launch is the inclusion of Gemini 2.5, Google’s most advanced large language model to date. During the Google I/O 2025 event, the company demonstrated how Gemini improves the answer quality and depth within AI in Google Search.

Gemini 2.5 supports complex analysis of Google Searches, such as comparing multiple variables or summarizing long-form content. It can now understand the intent behind questions better and provide insights rather than just raw data.

This advancement also enhances Google AI-powered search results, which become more conversational, context-driven, and helpful for everyday decisions.

Deep Search and Smarter Interactions

Another feature that was launched at the event was Deep Search in Google AI mode, which goes deep into web pages beyond the standard snippet. Deep Search in Google AI Mode offers a more comprehensive searching experience, providing longer, expert-level answers that are informatively well-referenced, almost as good as reading a lengthy report. Multiple references and useful links for further research are included in each answer.

This is particularly helpful to students, researchers, or anyone dealing with intricate questions. For example, someone conducting a study on climate change policies around the world is now able to receive an AI-based comparison with valid sources referenced in the answer.

Liz Reid said, “ Deep Search uses the same query fan-out technique but taken to the next level. It can issue hundreds of searches, reason across disparate pieces of information, and create an expert-level fully-cited report in just minutes, saving you hours of research.”

Google Overviews Get an Upgrade

Google Overviews, the concise, AI-generated summaries at the top of many search results, are getting a major upgrade too. The new version includes more visuals, real-time data links, and expanded support for health, science, and finance topics.

With the help of Gemini 2.5, these overviews will now be able to analyze multiple sources and give users a better understanding of a topic in seconds. According to Google, user feedback will shape how overviews evolve further in the coming months.

A Timely Launch with Strategic Benefits

Here are a few real-world examples of how the new experience works:

  • Planning a trip? Ask for a 5-day itinerary for Paris, and Google AI Mode will lay it out with hotel suggestions, landmarks, and costs.
  • Comparing smartphones? The AI can provide a detailed feature breakdown with links to verified sources.
  • Learning about Bitcoin? Get an AI-powered search response that summarizes recent trends, regulations, and market behavior.

The AI in Google Search changes one-off queries into full conversations, helping users get more done with less effort.

What’s Next?

For now, Google AI Mode is available only to users in the U.S., but the company says it plans to expand internationally later this year. The launch will continue to improve with features like voice support, interactive charts, and even integration with Google Workspace.

The announcement at Google I/O 2025 makes it clear that Google’s vision for the future is search that understands, adapts, and evolves with the user. With the power of Gemini 2.5, the depth of Deep Search, and the clarity of Google Overviews, the company has reimagined the search engine from the ground up.
