- Content creators will have to label AI-generated Shorts when they publish them
YouTube plans to integrate AI into content creation tools. According to Gadgets360, the video streaming platform said content creators will be able to publish AI-generated YouTube Shorts featuring realistic versions of themselves.
“This year you’ll be able to create a Short using your own likeness, produce games with a simple text prompt, and experiment with music,” YouTube CEO, Neal Mohan said in a blog post.
AI Tools to Power Content Creation
YouTube noted that artificial intelligence will continue to power tools for creative expression without replacing creators. Like Instagram Reels, YouTube’s AI creator feature will allow users to add image-based posts on Shorts and share them directly on their subscriber feeds.
It’s still unclear how AI-powered music experimentation and game creation using the new YouTube Shorts feature will work. The video streaming platform also provided scanty details about its upcoming AI features. However, it is highly likely that they will be similar to OpenAI’s Sora 2 video generation app.
The AI-powered app allows users to use text prompts to generate photorealistic avatars by creating short selfie videos and audio clips. YouTube also said it will introduce new formats for Shorts.
The video streaming platform said it labels AI-generated content, and that content creators will be expected to do the same when they publish synthetic content on the platform. YouTube did not reveal the timelines for launching AI tools for digital video creators.
The Low-Quality Concern Challenge
CEO Mohan n addressed the growing concern around low-quality, AI-generated content on YouTube. The company said that historically, it has been keen to avoid imposing rigid assumptions on its content creator network.
However, the company acknowledged that it is responsible for maintaining high-quality viewing experience to its viewers. YouTube further said that it continues to build on existing systems to reduce the spread of repetitive, low-quality AI-generated content. Those systems are designed to curb clickbait and spam.
Recently, YouTube Music faced backlash for recommending AI-generated songs to subscribers. Users on the platform said that the algorithm on the platform was pushing AI songs to their feeds and features like “not interested” and “dislike” had failed to fix the issue.
Focus on Tightening Parental Controls
With YouTube Shorts averaging 200 billion views per day, the tech giant said it plans to strengthen parental controls on the platform this year. The company will be adding new tools to enable parents to limit how much time their children and teens spend scrolling.
Previously, YouTube has taken steps to boost teen safety online. The platform created a teen mental health video section to provide curated, age-appropriate content on mental health topics.
The company also plans to expand revenue generation opportunities for content creators, promising that creators will soon see new ways to earn from their content. Some of the ideas that the platform is considering include shopping and brand deals and fan funding features like gifts and jewels.
