TikTok Brings Ad-Free Service to the U.K. Amid Data Privacy Concerns
In Focus
- Users who want to use the ad-free service in the U.K. will pay £3.99 per month
- The ad-free subscription service will be available to users aged 18 and above
- Unsubscribed users will continue to use the platform with personalized ads.
TikTok has introduced an ad-free subscription service in the U.K. Users will have to pay a $5.44 (£3.99) monthly subscription fee to access the new service. The company plans to roll out the new service in the coming months. TikTok’s U.K. subscription services will be available to users aged 18 years and above. TikTok will start notifying users about the ad-free option on May 11, 2026.
Ad-Free Subscribers Will View Sponsored Content
Paid-up subscribers will not see ads on the video-streaming platform. However, such users will still view content shared by creators who are either paid or sponsored to advertise specific products or services. Users can change their preferences at any time.
“We have a set of in-app controls in Settings so that people can update their preferences anytime. TikTok Ad-Free subscribers can use these to change their plan,” TikTok noted in a company statement.
TikTok, which is developing an age-verification system for the EU, did not state whether users can decide whether or not to subscribe to the ad-free service. However, the video-streaming platform said users who choose the free version will continue to use the platform with TikTok personalized ads.
“Whether people opt for TikTok Ad-Free or continue with the ad-supported version, their core TikTok experience won’t change. People will still have access to all the same features, creators, and content that make TikTok unique,” The company added.
The Ad-Free Service Gives Users Choice
The video-streaming company said that the no ads plan on TikTok is designed to expand choice for users on how they experience the platform.
“Choice for our community and growth for U.K. businesses go hand in hand on TikTok. Advertising on our platform is already helping thousands of British businesses reach new customers, increase sales and create jobs, while our new ad-free option gives people greater control over their experience,” TikTok’s UK managing director, Kris Boger noted.
But some experts claim the move is part of a growing practice among social media companies where they introduce a monthly fee on users who want to avoid their ad-targeting machines. Several social media platforms have introduced similar subscriptions.
Last year, Meta introduced an ad-free service for Facebook and Instagram users in the U.K. last year. The social media giant charges a £2.99 and £3.99 monthly subscription fee for web and smartphone users respectively.
What Ad-Free Subscriptions Mean for Privacy
TikTok’s move to launch an ad-free service is likely driven by the need to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The data protection law prohibits companies from collecting personal data from users for use in advertising without their consent.
The video-streaming company said data belonging to paid-up subscribers will not be used for advertising purposes. But experts argue that most users will most likely choose not to pay for ad-free plans. By doing so, the practice of paying for online privacy is slowly becoming the norm. TikTok started testing its paid plan in 2023. It’s still unclear whether the social media giant will introduce the ad-free plan to the U.S. market.
