Elon Musk Outlines Bold Timelines for Tesla Robotaxi Expansion Despite Limited Coverage
In Focus
- Musk said Tesla self-driving taxis would roll out nationally by the end of 2026
- Tesla robotaxis currently operate in Dallas, Houston, and Austin
- Musk maintained optimism about the future of fully self-driving vehicles
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he expects fully self-driving cars to be widespread in the U.S. by the end of this year. Musk announced Tesla’s robotaxi expansion plans during the Smart Mobility Summit in Tel Aviv, Israel, which he joined via a video link.
What Did Musk Predict About Autonomous Vehicles?
Musk said Tesla’s autonomous taxi service vehicles, which already operate in Texas, would roll out nationally within 2026. Despite making bold predictions that have frequently failed to materialize within proposed timelines, Musk maintains optimism about the future of fully self-driving vehicles.
“Five years from now and certainly 10 years from now, probably 90% of all distance driven will be driven by the AI in a self-driving car. So overwhelmingly, it’ll be quite a niche thing in 10 years to actually be driving your own car,” Musk stated as cited by the Independent.
Tesla currently operates self-driving taxis in Dallas, Austin, and Houston. A recent report showed that its taxi services are plagued by numerous problems including frequent unavailability, far-away drop-off points, and extended wait times. Last year, Tesla acquired a permit to autonomous cabs in Arizona.
What Challenges Do Robotaxi Firms in the U.S. Face?
Safety is one of the biggest challenges that robotaxis companies in the U.S. face. Elon Musk outlined robotaxi plans as Tesla recalled over 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. over delayed images from rearview cameras. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the defect could increase the risk of crash.
Tesla also faced a 30-day sales halt in California last year. The company faced the ban over allegations that its marketing was misleading buyers regarding the actual capabilities of its automated driving systems. In December 2025, Amazon-owned Zoox recalled 332 vehicles in the U.S due to a software flaw.
The NTSA said the flaw could cause the self-driving vehicles to cross yellow lines at the center of the road. It could also cause Zoox vehicles to stop in front of oncoming traffic near intersections, increasing the risk of collisions significantly
Waymo hasn’t been spared either. Recently, the Alphabet-owned robotaxi firm recalled approximately 3,800 vehicles in the U.S. The company took the step after it noticed that its vehicles could get into flooded roads at higher speeds, which raises safety concerns.
What Did Musk Say About SpaceX?
While speaking at the Smart Mobility Summit, Musk discussed SpaceX, which is preparing to list publicly this year. The Tesla CEO said the satellite company is almost completing the development of reusable rocket launch systems.
“We might succeed in doing that this year. When that technology is developed, that will be a fork in the road to human history, where we can become a space-bearing civilization,” he noted.
According to Musk, this move will lower the cost of space travel significantly. He also predicted that humanoid robots will be available and widely accessible within the next decade.
