Tesla Drops One-Time Payment for FSD, Shifts to Monthly Subscription

In Focus

  • Tesla currently sells FSD for a one-time payment of $8,000
  • FSD will become a subscription-only service starting from February 14, 2026
  • Monthly FSD subscriptions could generate recurring revenue for Tesla

Tesla is dropping the $8,000 one-time payment option for its supervised Full Self-Driving Software (FSD). According to Reuters, the EV manufacturer has been offering U.S. customers the option of paying a one-time fee for lifetime access or a Tesla FSD subscription of $99 per month.

Tesla Shifts to Monthly Subscription in February 2026

Announcing the decision on January 13, 2026, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the self-driving system will only be available as a monthly subscription starting February 14, 2026. Tesla’s new FSD business model means access to self-driving driving will be based on ongoing subscription payments.

Musk did not reveal the reason why Tesla is stopping the sale of FSD. The FSD requires drivers to stay alert while in motion and intervene where needed. Tesla also requires drivers to keep their hands on the steering and eyes on the road.

News of Tesla’s FSD monthly plan comes months after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started investigating 2.88 million cars that use the system. The traffic safety regulator announced the probe after receiving over 50 reports relating to traffic violations and multiple crashes.

Boosting Recurring Revenue

Tesla has been struggling with dipping sales in recent months, with deliveries declining significantly in Q4 of 2025. The company has also struggled to convert Tesla owners into paying FSD subscribers. The shift to a monthly subscription suggests a keen interest in maximizing recurring revenue from its FSD.

Tesla is offering FSD only as a subscription months after company shareholders approved Musk’s $1 trillion pay package, which features 12 performance-based share option tranches. One of the operational milestones in the package is attaining 10 million active FSD subscriptions.

A One-Month Window to Buy FSD

Tesla’s self-driving subscription announcement gives EV owners about a month to decide whether to buy the FSD for lifetime ownership. The FSD package is currently available in specific Tesla vehicles. People who buy Model 3, Model Y, and the All-Wheel Drive Cybertruck variant pay an additional $8,000 for the self-driving system.

The EV maker includes FSD in the price of Model Y and S variants, as well as the Cyberbeast. Tesla recently launched standard versions of Model Y and Model 3, but these do not feature the self-driving system.

The company now calls its self-driving system Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Although Tesla made the change in response to regulations, it still uses the unsupervised version in specific factory settings.

Roll-Out to Other Markets

Tesla did not explain whether FSD’s shift from a one-time payment to a subscription-based model applies to markets outside the U.S. But going by previous practice, the EV maker introduces major product and pricing changes in the U.S. first before applying to markets such as the U.K. and Europe.

Considering the company’s push to boost software-based revenue, it will not be surprising if the measures are rolled out to other markets soon. Currently, U.K. drivers pay a one-time FSD upgrade fee of about 6,800 pounds. Introducing the monthly subscription in Britain could make the self-driving software much more accessible to drivers.
