Premium Spotify Users in the US and Canada Gain Access to AI Playlists

In Focus

  • Spotify introduces AI-powered playlists for Premium subscribers in North America
  • Users can generate custom playlists through detailed natural-language prompts
  • AI uses listening history and global music trends for personalized recommendations
  • Competitors are exploring AI features, but Spotify emphasizes creative, user-driven control

Spotify has officially launched its AI-driven playlist feature for Premium users in the U.S. and Canada, according to a report by TechCrunch. Users can describe moods, themes, scenarios, or even request songs from artists they have never heard before, and the AI generates a playlist matching the request.

Spotify Brings AI-Powered Playlists to Premium Users

The new feature, called Prompted Playlists, allows users to create fully personalized playlists using natural-language prompts. The company emphasizes that the AI considers a listener’s history alongside global music trends to provide highly relevant and fresh recommendations, bridging both discovery and personalization.

J.J. Italiano, Head of Global Music Curation and Discovery at Spotify, explained that the feature was designed to let anyone build a playlist, even if they aren’t familiar with music curation or the specific terms to use.

“For most people, isn’t a part of their job. You don’t always have the time or the energy to keep building the perfect playlist every time your mood changes, and that’s where prompted playlists will come in,” said Italiano, as cited by TechCrunch.

“This gives listeners access to that creative process without needing to know genres, or years, or industry language. You don’t need the right words. You just need your words. If you can describe a feeling, you can make a playlist,” he further added.

In a demonstration of the feature, Spotify showed how a prompt asking for an introduction to an unfamiliar artist resulted in a playlist that highlighted their best songs first while maintaining a cohesive listening experience. The feature was previously tested in markets such as New Zealand before its North American expansion and is currently available in English only for Premium subscribers.

How Spotify AI-Powered Playlists Stand Out

The launch of Spotify’s AI-powered playlists positions the company as a leader in AI-driven music streaming innovation. Unlike basic algorithmic recommendations that suggest music based on previous listening patterns, Spotify’s approach allows for more nuanced, conversational prompts.

Industry competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music have experimented with AI-assisted playlists, but Spotify’s solution emphasizes user creativity rather than automated suggestions alone. The company has also partnered with Netflix to introduce curated video podcasts on Netflix’s platform.

The Future of Music with AI-Driven Playlists

Spotify’s AI playlists rollout highlights how artificial intelligence is reshaping music consumption and digital entertainment. For the B2B and tech sectors, this launch showcases how AI can be applied to drive engagement, personalization, and subscription growth.

The innovation signals a shift in expectations across the music streaming industry, suggesting that creative, AI-driven tools may soon become standard features across global platforms. Spotify’s approach could redefine the intersection of AI and entertainment, setting new expectations for what music streaming services can offer.
