The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has started a new initiative to build a large language model (LLM) ecosystem for India. The government revealed its first shortlist of companies which will take part in this ambitious new project. Sarvam is one of the companies dedicated to the rapidly expanding AI sector in India. According to The Economic Times, Sarvam and MeitY are collaborating to develop an LLM program for substantial breakthrough points during this development.
The initiative aims to establish India-focused LLMs that are capable of handling different Indian languages combined with support for domestic content generation and meeting both public sector and corporate demands. MeitY shortlisted LLM firms for collaborating to produce AI models which represent India’s linguistic diversity alongside its distinctive requirements under this initiative.
One of the notable names on the list is Sarvam AI, which is rising rapidly as an important name in the nation’s tech scene. After being included in the government’s shortlisted names, Sarvam AI now positions itself among other established startups that are shaping India’s AI future.
The company has been chosen with regard to its ability, research interest, and willingness to cater to large model training. The choice also marks a strong vote of confidence in Sarvam India’s LLM startup potential, particularly as the demand for home-grown AI solutions increases.
Soket AI Labs CEO Abhishek Upperwal revealed that the firm has pitched creating a 120-billion parameter open-source Indic LLM under its ‘EKA Project’. The model would be trained on 2 trillion tokens, but he did not say how much funding they are seeking. He said, “Ours is a 12-month proposal, but we are looking to have multiple small models in the next six months.”
Sarvam AI and government projects serve as an essential component within MeitY’s initiative to decrease dependence on foreign AI technological systems. The project develops LLMs with both extensive multilingual functionality and localization for the Indian market which global models frequently overlook.
Officials predict these models will start providing backbone service capabilities to digital services operating in healthcare and other sectors including education and agriculture and law. Through government funding and support, firms like Sarvam will obtain both the computational resources and necessary data to develop strong AI systems.
The collaboration between Sarvam on MeitY over LLM efforts highlights how closely the public and private sectors are now working together to drive innovation. This partnership may pave the way for startups to take center stage in critical tech initiatives that were once dominated by global giants.
For Sarvam AI, this project represents more than just a contract, it’s an opportunity to lead India’s AI narrative from the front. The company’s work in this space could help build tools and platforms that are better suited for Indian users, across both rural and urban markets.
The shortlisted firms should start working on the initial development process which includes creating model structures alongside dataset preparation and ensuring their outputs meet India’s regulatory requirements. The MeitY administration will probably issue updates about their progress throughout the development process.
Being one of the LLM firms shortlisted by MeitY enables Sarvam AI and other participants to shape the digital future of India through a national opportunity with innovative potential.
