Perplexity has signed a multi-year licensing deal with image distributor, Getty Images. According to Reuters, the Getty Images Perplexity licensing deal allows the AI firm to display images belonging to the image distribution firm on its AI-powered search tools. Getty stock surged 50% in early trading following the deal
Under the Getty Images Perplexity multi-year deal, Perplexity can embed Getty Images’ API technology in its AI-powered platforms. This integration will help improve image attribution.
“We are pleased to reach this agreement with Perplexity, which acknowledges the importance of properly attributed content and its value in enhancing AI-powered products,” VP for Strategic Development at Getty Images Nick Unsworth said. Unsworth added that the latest deal will “increase the quality and accuracy of information delivered to consumers, ultimately building a more engaging and reliable experience.”
The image licensing deal will see Perplexity AI search improve its features to include source links and image credits and educate users about legal use of licensed content.
Perplexity AI is partnering with Getty images at a time when scrutiny on how AI firms use copyrighted content is on the rise.
The AI-powered search startup has been accused of copyright infringement by multiple publishers. Recently, Perplexity AI faced legal action after Reddit sued it in New York for data scraping.
Commenting about the deal with Getty Images, the AI startup underscored the importance of accuracy and content attribution saying the two are critical in helping people understand the world in the AI age.
“Together, we’re helping people discover answers through powerful visual storytelling while ensuring they always know where that content comes from and who created it,” Perplexity’s Content and Publisher Partnerships Head Jessica Chan said.

Perplexity’s latest deal is part of Getty’s efforts to support AI-powered creativity and helping users to create visuals using licensed content within generative AI environments.
The latest partnership highlights the impact of licensing agreements on copyright and AI platforms. It’s part of the growing trend where online publishers license AI firms to expand content access.
Last year, publishers in New York sued Perplexity for copyright infringement. The AI firm has developed a revenue-sharing model and partnered with several other content outlets including Der Spiegel and Time.
With licensing deals, publishers can generate revenue while ensuring that AI platforms respect intellectual property. Previously, Getty Images took legal action against Stability AI and other platforms for using its assets without permission.
