OpenAI Discusses a Potential $60 Billion Investment with U.S. Big Techs
In Focus
- OpenAI needs additional capital to support its growing AI needs
- NVIDIA is considering a $30 billion investment in OpenAI
- Amazon could invest more than $10 billion in the AI developer
OpenAI is reportedly in talks with NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Amazon about a potential $60 billion investment, Reuters reported. NVIDIA is considering investing up to $30 billion in the AI developer. OpenAI uses NVIDIA processors from the U.S. chipmaker to power its AI models. News of OpenAI’s investment from big techs comes amidst growing concerns about circular financing in the AI industry.
Amazon Could Become OpenAI’s New Investor
If OpenAI’s $60 billion investment talks lead to a deal, Amazon could become OpenAI’s newest investor. Sources close to the talks say that Amazon might invest a significant amount in OpenAI, over $10 billion or even more than $20 billion.
News about Amazon’s potential investment in OpenAI first emerged last month. At the time, potential funding from the cloud service provider was expected to exceed $10 billion. Although Amazon has not invested in OpenAI before, the two companies have an ongoing cloud service partnership.
Last year, a partnership between AWS and OpenAI brought AI models to Amazon’s cloud platform. The presence of OpenAI models on AWS represented a significant milestone in cloud computing and AI accessibility.
As the two big techs consider investing in OpenAI, Amazon’s investment will be determined by a possible extension of the cloud server agreement. A commercial deal to sell the company’s products, like enterprise ChatGPT, is also under consideration.
NVIDIA, Microsoft Are Early Investors
Both NVIDIA and Microsoft have invested in OpenAI before. NVIDIA is an early investor in the AI firm. Last year, NVIDIA and OpenAI teamed up in a major U.K. data center investment deal. The collaboration involved a U.K. project by Nscale Global Holdings, a London-based data center operator that specializes in energy-efficient and scalable data centers.
Microsoft is also a long-term investor in OpenAI and holds a 27% stake, equivalent to $135 billion, in the company following a restructuring deal. Sources close to OpenAI say Microsoft is in talks to invest less than $10 billion. Although the software giant still plays a significant role in OpenAI’s future, it holds no rights to its consumer hardware products.
Why the Big Tech Investment Matters to OpenAI
OpenAI is seeking investment from big techs to support its growing AI needs. The AI developer is facing stiff competition from Google, which has embarked on a massive rollout of Gemini AI. Currently, Gemini AI is easily accessible through search.
The AI firm also faces competition from Anthropic and is in need of significant capital to build new models to stay ahead of the AI race. If OpenAI succeeds in the current funding round, it could ease investor concerns about its spending. In recent months, investors have expressed doubts about OpenAI’s ability to meet financial commitments with Microsoft and Oracle.
