OpenAI is partnering with Foxconn to design and produce key equipment for AI data centers. The OpenAI Foxconn partnership is part of a broader strategy to boost AI infrastructure in the U.S., Yahoo Finance reported.
Foxconn and OpenAI to Co-Design Data Center Racks
Under the latest partnership, OpenAI and Foxconn will co-design and manufacture key equipment like AI data center racks, networking, cabling, and power systems for AI data centers in its U.S. factories.
OpenAI will have early access to these products to evaluate them and potentially acquire them. As the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, Foxconn assembles iPhones for Apple and makes AI servers for NVIDIA.
According to the electronics firm’s website, Foxconn’s U.S. AI factories are located in Texas, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Virginia. Earlier this year, the electronics company said that it would work with SoftBank to produce data center equipment in the Ohio plant.
OpenAI’s Efforts to Meet Computing Power Needs
In recent months, OpenAI has signed multi-billion chip supply deals with AMD and NVIDIA as it works towards building the extensive computing power it needs to run its AI models and services.
OpenAI has partnered with Broadcom to develop and launch its own AI processors. This move could redefine data center networking and chip supply strategies in the AI industry,
Foxconn has been diversifying its manufacturing business and even acquired electronics firms in a bid to expand its product offerings. However, Foxconn’s AI hardware manufacturing deal with OpenAI does not include financial or purchase commitments.
“This partnership is a step toward ensuring the core technologies of the AI era are built here. We believe this work will strengthen U.S. leadership and help ensure the benefits of AI are widely shared,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in the statement.
OpenAI’s AI Spending Raises Concerns
OpenAI has committed to spend $1.4 trillion building computational resources over the next eight years. Investors have raised concerns over the AI startup’s massive spending plan and its ability to recover its investment while maintaining profitability.
Altman expects OpenAI’s annual revenue to reach $20 billion in 2025, and grow into hundreds of billions over the next five years.
Foxconn is among the tech manufacturers that have benefited from the AI boom. In the July-September quarter, the company reported $1.8 billion in net profit, representing a 17% growth from the same period in 2024. Revenue from its cloud and networking unit, which includes AI servers, contributed a significant portion of this profit.
Foxconn stock has gained 25% since the beginning of this year. Working with Foxconn, OpenAI will be able to roll out new products faster.
