OpenAI Eyes the Translation Industry With ChatGPT Translate

In Focus

  • ChatGPT Translate interface resembles that of Google Translate
  • The new tool currently supports 50+ languages
  • Users don’t require accounts to access ChatGPT Translate

OpenAI is now offering text translation on a newly released ChatGPT interface. According to Gadgets360, OpenAI’s ChatGPT translate feature opens in a webpage similar to Google Translate. To translate content, users have the option of either typing it in or pasting it from a different source.

Translation Tool Supports Over 50 Languages

OpenAI has developed a new ChatGPT translation tool despite the AI chatbot having the ability to translate content from and into multiple languages. The AI developer issued a Code Red directive recently that shifted the company’s focus toward critical ChatGPT improvements.

The new tool, which can translate text to and from over 50 languages, including English, Arabic, Spanish, and Japanese, may be one of those improvements. Currently, the ChatGPT translation interface does not have an “add image” option.

The option is likely being developed alongside the voice input feature for personal computers. Users don’t require an account to access ChatGPT Translate. However, logged-in users can access more features.

The interface provides several shortcuts to change styles in translated text. The tool, however, shifts the revised text to the main ChatGPT interface once a user selects a new style.

OpenAI introduced a translation interface shortly after it unveiled an experience called ChatGPT Health. With this experience, users can link wellness apps and medical records to its AI chatbot.

How Does ChatGPT Translate Work?

ChatGPT Translate features two boxes appearing side by side. The tool comes with automatic language detection and quick translations. Just like Google Translate, users input text into one box and translations appear on the next box.

Mobile devices allow for voice inputs, and words get translated in real time. To use ChatGPT Translate, users have to:

  • Visit chatgpt.com/translate
  • Select a language source of their text
  • Input the text into the first box
  • Toggle the drop menu on the second box to select language
  • View translated text on the second box

OpenAI says the translation tool can detect text tone, context, and idioms to generate better outputs. The company allows users to select text phrasing, allowing them to make translations casual, simpler, formal, fluent, or even academic.

OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Translate at a time when tech companies are seeking to widen reach through translation features. In August 2025, Meta launched an AI-powered voice translation feature for Instagram and Facebook Reels. The feature uses the voice of individual creators, allowing them to preserve their tone and style in Reels.

ChatGPT Translate vs Google Translate

OpenAI is seeking to compete directly with Google Translate with its new translation tool. Although Google Translate may lack a feature like text rephrasing, ChatGPT Translate still lags behind in various ways.

The most obvious shortcoming involves the languages in the ChatGPT Translate tool. Compared to the 50+ languages on OpenAI’s translation tool, Google supports about 243 languages.

The search giant also translates a wider range of formats, including images, camera feeds, documents, and real-time conversations. These formats are currently not supported by OpenAI’s translation platform.
