- OpenAI’s current privacy framework applies to the health workspace
OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Health, a new space that allows users to securely link third-party wellness apps and medical records with the AI chatbot. According to Gadgets360, the new space is designed for users who prefer unified and cohesive experiences when querying the AI bot about health-related issues. These include test results, workout or diet advice, health insurance information, and doctor appointments
In a post published on its website, OpenAI described ChatGPT Health as “a dedicated experience that securely brings your health information and ChatGPT’s intelligence together, to help you feel more informed, prepared, and confident navigating your health.”
High Volumes of Health Queries on ChatGPT
OpenAI, which launched GPT 5.2 recently, introduced the AI-powered ChatGPT’s Health feature after experiencing high volume of health-related queries on its chatbot. The AI developer noted that every week, users ask hundreds of millions of questions about health and wellness.
Through ChatGPT Health, OpenAI categorizes health applications, conversations, and files away from the ordinary chat history. The AI developer said information and memories from ChatGPT Health will remain within the new space and will not be used to train its foundation models.
News about ChatGPT Health launch comes days after OpenAI said it was hiring Head of Preparedness to manage emerging AI safety risks. The company said it was offering a significant compensation package for the position.
AI Tool is Not for Treatment or Diagnosis
OpenAI was quick to inform users that the ChatGPT AI healthcare tool is not to be used for diagnosis and treatment; and that it should not replace medical care. Instead, it’s supposed to enable users in navigating day-to-day questions by providing more relevant responses based on the health information provided by users.
“ChatGPT Health is another step toward turning ChatGPT into a personal super-assistant that can support you with information and tools to achieve your goals across any part of your life,” OpenAI’s CEO of Applications Fidji Simo stated in a Substack post.
The platform integrates with different health data sources, including Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, and Function. Last week, the AI developer stepped up development of advanced OpenAI audio models in a bid to address long-standing limitations in conversational AI voice systems. OpenAI’s health feature is currently in pilot stage in preparation for wider rollout in months to come.
How OpenAI Secures User Data on ChatGPT Health
OpenAI has taken various measures to secure user data on its new ChatGPT Health workspace. The company said its current privacy framework applies to the new workspace.
These include automatic chat deletion within 30 days, safeguards to keep personal data from being used in model training, and multi-factor authentication. The health workspace also features layered protections like data isolation and purpose-built encryption that surpass OpenAI’s current security controls.
This approach is aimed at reducing exposure of sensitive data. The company is leveraging b.well’s connectivity technology to make personal medical records accessible within ChatGPT Health.
