OpenAI has made artificial intelligence more accessible to millions of users by introducing its most affordable subscription tier yet. ChatGPT Go’s $4.60 launch in India marks a significant milestone for the AI company, as it targets price-sensitive markets with budget-friendly options, CNBC reported.
OpenAI said in a statement on its website that the new plan, called ChatGPT Go, offers access to the latest GPT-5 model and additional features at a lower cost. In a social media post, ChatGPT lead Nick Turley said the new plan increases allowances across the board, offering 10x more messages, image generations, and file uploads, along with twice the memory of the free tier.
Turley posted, “Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We’re rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries.”
The new subscription plan represents OpenAI’s cheapest ChatGPT plan in India has ever seen. At $4.60, OpenAI currently offers two other paid plans. ChatGPT Plus costs ₹1,999 per month in India, while the top-tier ChatGPT Pro is priced at ₹19,900 per month in India (or $200 internationally). This pricing strategy aims to make advanced AI tools accessible to a broader range of users across the country.
ChatGPT Go includes several valuable features that were previously available only to premium subscribers. The plan also includes limited access to advanced features like web browsing, file uploads, and custom GPT creation.
The most exciting feature is that OpenAI’s GPT 5 access will be available in ChatGPT Go. This means subscribers to the affordable plan won’t miss out on OpenAI’s next-generation AI technology. Users will get early access to GPT-5 capabilities without paying the full premium subscription price.
ChatGPT Go also includes access to OpenAI’s latest reasoning models and creative tools. Users can upload images, documents, and other files for analysis. The plan supports conversations with memory, allowing ChatGPT to remember previous discussions and provide more personalized responses.
Earlier this month, OpenAI launched GPT 5, which received mixed reviews. Some of the negative feedback led OpenAI to restore access to the older GPT 4 models for paying users.
The launch of the affordable ChatGPT Go plan in India shows OpenAI recognizes the country’s huge market potential. India has one of the world’s largest populations of English-speaking internet users, making it an ideal testing ground for affordable AI services. Other OpenAI competitors have also been eyeing India and its rapidly growing base of more than 800 million internet users, hoping to establish a strong foothold in the market.
OpenAI chose India as the first market for ChatGPT Go because of the country’s price-sensitive consumer base. Many Indian users have been interested in AI tools but found existing subscription plans too expensive for regular use. The new pricing makes ChatGPT accessible to students, small business owners, and individual professionals.
OpenAI’s subscription growth in India strategy involves capturing market share through competitive pricing. By offering premium AI features at a fraction of the usual cost, OpenAI hopes to build a large user base in India before expanding the affordable plan to other markets. Last month, AI-powered search platform Perplexity partnered with Bharti Airtel to give all Airtel customers a free 12-month subscription to Perplexity Pro.
Industry experts say this kind of low-cost model could change how AI companies enter international markets. If the ChatGPT Go plan succeeds in India, it could be rolled out to other price-sensitive regions such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, and parts of Africa.
