  • Amazon, NVIDIA, and SoftBank participated in the latest funding round
  • OpenAI and Amazon announced a multi-year cloud service collaboration
  • OpenAI faces stiff competition from Anthropic and Google

OpenAI has raised $110 billion in a funding round that raised more than double the raise last year. According to CNBC, Amazon and NVIDIA invested $50 billion and $30 billion in the financing round respectively.

Japanese conglomerate SoftBank invested $30 billion in the financing round. This is the second time SoftBank is investing in OpenAI. Last year, the company invested $40 billion in the ChatGPT maker.

OpenAI’s Valuation Rises After Recent Fundraising

OpenAI’s 2026 funding pushes the company’s pre-money valuation to $730 billion, up from the $500 billion in its October 2025 financing. The company expects other investors to join the funding round as it progresses.

We’re super excited about this deal. AI is going to happen everywhere. It’s transforming the whole economy, and the world needs a lot of collective computing power to meet the demand,” CEO Sam Altman said.

Earlier this year, OpenAI was reported as holding talks with NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Amazon about a potential $60 billion investment. The AI developer uses NVIDIA processors to power its models. News about NVIDIA’s investment in OpenAI has raised concerns about circular financing in the AI industry.

A Strategic Partnership With Amazon

Besides Amazon’s $50 billion investment in OpenAI, the two companies announced a multi-year collaboration. As part of the partnership, the two companies will develop custom AI models to power Amazon’s customer-focused applications.

The ChatGPT maker will also expand its $38 billion AWS contract by $100 billion in the coming 8 years. Additionally, AWS will now serve as OpenAI’s exclusive cloud distribution provider for Frontier, the service designed to make AI agent development and deployment easier for enterprises.

OpenAI launched the platform early this month and has initiated partnerships with consulting firms in a bid to expand its presence in the enterprise market. Amazon’s investment in the AI developer will be phased, starting with a $15 billion commitment. The retailer will make the second $35 billion installment in the coming months, after OpenAI meets specific conditions.

It’s so early right now in the AI space, and OpenAI is off to an amazing start. They’re going to be one of the very big winners, we believe, long term. I think we can help them quite a bit as part of this partnership,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said.

OpenAI’s 2030 Spending Plan

OpenAI has been reshaping the artificial intelligence industry since it launched ChatGPT. However, the company has to continue raising funds to meet rising costs, particularly AI chips and data centers amidst growing competition from Anthropic and Google.

In recent months, the company has estimated that OpenAI’s compute spending by 2030 would be about $600 billion. The AI developer company appears to be offering a smaller, more specific spending plan. It is also setting clearer timelines as concerns about its ambitious expansion plans and revenue generation potential grow.
