U.S-based workspace software Notion has opened an office in the UK. According to UKTech News, Notion launched a UK office to support its rapid European expansion. Notion also opened offices in Paris and Munich. The European offices will serve as hubs for Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions.
Notion’s move to open the London office is part of its EMEA expansion strategy. The company appointed Mick Hodgins as its general manager for the EMEA region. Hodgins previously served as a manager in Google Manager.
“It’s an honour to join Notion at this exciting moment for both the company and industry. As organisations across EMEA navigate AI, we have an opportunity to transform how they work with beautiful, flexible tools that elevate human craft. Notion now has tens of millions of users in EMEA—from students to CEOs, from high-growth startups to established enterprises. This diverse and innovative ecosystem shows that the future of work is at our fingertips,” Hodgins said.
Commenting on Hodgin’s appointment, Notion’s Chief Revenue Officer Erica Anderson termed him the ideal person to lead in growing the company’s customer base.
“We’re delighted to have Mick onboard to lead the next phase of growth in EMEA. EMEA continues to be an important region for Notion as we invest in international markets. With his extensive experience and builder mindset, he’s the ideal leader to scale our team and support our growing customer base across the region,” Notion’s Chief Revenue Officer Erica Anderson said.
Notion opened its first European regional headquarters in 2021 in Dublin. The office is currently served by more than 100 staff. Backed by Sequoia and Index Ventures, Notion is currently valued at $10 billion.
Notion said that it is partnering with Amazon Web Services to open a data residency as part of its plan to expand into Europe. This move will see data belonging to Notion Enterprise users being stored either in the EU or in the US.
By pursuing data residency, Notion will be protecting European citizen’s data while ensuring compliance with EU data privacy laws that include the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). American tech companies have faced data privacy complaints in the EU in recent years. In June 2024, Meta was spotlighted after privacy complaints raised concerns over personal data abuse.
A Vienna-based lobby group, None of Your Business (NOYB) sued Meta in 11 European countries over complaints relating to its privacy policy. In its lawsuit, the data privacy group claimed that under the privacy policy, Meta could use personal data to train AI. NOYB took action after it discovered that Meta planned to use private images, personal posts, and online tracking data collected since 2007 for its AI technology.
Founded in 2013, Notion has been positioning itself as a platform that simplifies work by connecting the tools that people use. The platform brings different tools onto one platform and incorporates their various functions in a minimalist and customizable way. This allows users to do a range of things on the platform, including managing projects, taking notes, collaborating with their teams, and creating wikis among others.
In August 2024, Notion reported that it has surpassed 100 million users globally with teams from over 50% of the Fortune 500 companies using the platform. In the same year, the productivity platform acquired Campsite, a communication platform that provides tools for distributed teams. Notion has also expanded its product range to include Notion Mail, Notion Charts, and Notion AI.
The platform launched Notion Mail after acquiring privacy-focused startup, Skiff. The AI-powered email app enables Notion users to sort, label, and filter emails with ease. It also allows them to draft email responses using AI. With Notion Charts, users can visualize data on the productivity platform and conduct searches across platforms using Notion AI which is powered by GPT4 and Claude. Users can also use Notion’s website publishing tool to launch their sites directly from the platform.
