Microsoft Boosts AI Compute in Europe With New Mistral Deal
In Focus
- Microsoft will integrate Mistral’s AI models across its platforms
- Mistral will deploy thousands of Nvidia GPUs to increase AI compute
- Mistral’s Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models are available on Microsoft Foundry
Microsoft has expanded its strategic partnership with French AI firm Mistral to boost the uptake of frontier AI models by enterprises and regulated industries in Europe. Under the partnership, Microsoft will integrate Mistral’s frontier AI models across its platform including Microsoft Azure, Foundry, and Copilot Studio. Mistral offers large language models (LLMs) and infrastructure services to enterprises and governments.
What is the New Microsoft Mistral AI Deal?
The deal between Microsoft and Mistral is aimed at enabling enterprise customers in Europe to build and deploy AI in different operating environments. These include cloud, disconnected operations, and customer-controlled environments.
“Europe should have access to the world’s most capable AI without compromising control over their data, operations or digital future,” Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith noted in a company statement.
As demand for AI grows, organizations across Europe and other highly regulated industries are exploring ways to adopt advanced technologies without compromising data sovereignty, security or regulatory compliance.
The latest deal builds on Microsoft’s Sovereign Cloud approach. By merging Mistral’s frontier models with Microsoft’s European AI infrastructure, the partnership offers enterprises more options on where and how they deploy AI.
“Our mission has always been to put frontier AI in the hands of every organization while keeping them in control of their technology. With Microsoft as our partner, our models reach enterprises and public institutions at global scale,” Mistral’s Co-Founder and CEO Arthur Mensch said.
Focus on Europe’s AI Infrastructure
The latest deal includes a strong focus on AI infrastructure. Mistral plans to expand its GPU capacity in Europe. The AI firm will be deploying thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs to make AI compute available to enterprise customers in the region.
Earlier this year, Mistral raised $830 million in debt financing to purchase 13,800 GB300 GPUs from Nvidia. The AI firm plans to offer training, inference, and large-scale deployment support to European enterprises.
“By deploying NVIDIA Vera Rubin systems at scale, Mistral and Microsoft will give customers the computing foundation they need to build and run the next generation of AI across Europe and beyond,” Nvidia’s VP for Hyperscale and High-Performance Computing Ian Buck said.
Already, developers can access Mistral’s latest AI models on Microsoft Foundry. Deployment of the AI models enables developers to build, customize and deploy AI applications within Azure’s managed environment. Mistral’s Medium 3.5 offers an open-weight model with enterprise controls, sovereign deployment options, and scalable infrastructure.
The OCR 4 model supports document processing and AI agent workflows. Combined, the two AI models support a range of enterprise use cases, including automation, domain-specific applications and agentic AI, using Microsoft’s existing development tools and workflows.
What the Mistral Partnership Means for Microsoft
The expanded partnership strengthens Microsoft’s position in Europe’s enterprise AI market and expands its sovereign AI offerings. As more companies prioritize sovereign AI investments, this move will likely attract more regulated customers who seek secure, compliant AI deployment options to Microsoft.
