Meta has developed and unveiled the Facebook Content Tool to enable Reel creators to protect their work. According to TechCrunch, Meta’s content protection tool is currently available on mobile devices only. However, the social media giant is testing it on the Professional Dashboard on desktop computers.
Content Creators Can Detect Copied Reels
With Meta’s “copy-content” tool, creatives can detect when their original Facebook Reels get duplicated and used without their consent.
After receiving an alert on unauthorized use of their Reels, creators can:
- Block the visibility of their content across Facebook and Instagram
- Track performance of the copied Reel and optionally add attribution links
- Release claim on Reel and maintain visibility on Meta platforms
The new tool also Meta protects Reels creators on Instagram. However, Instagram creators will have to post their Reels on Facebook in order to track them. The tool also works when creators use the cross-posting option from Instagram to “Share to Facebook.”
Instagram-only posts that are not posted or shared on Facebook will not be tracked by this tool. Meta unveiled the content protection tool months after Instagram started piloting the Instagram Reels-first UI in India and South Korea.
Meta Limits Access to Creators of Original Content
Facebook creators enrolled in the Facebook Content Monetization program who meet enhanced originality and integrity standards are automatically being provided the feature; access is also rolling out to Rights Manager users.
Content creators should check for notifications in their feeds to confirm eligibility. They could also check their Professional Dashboard under the “Content Protection” section to find out whether they can access the tool.
Meta’s content tool uses the Reels matching technology as is currently applied on the company’s Rights Manager for copyright holders. For each match identified, the tool highlights the level of similarity in percentage and displays details such as views, number of followers, and monetization status.
Reels Protection Tool Gives Creators More Control
Meta’s duplicate content detection feature is part of the company’s strategy to enable original creatives to succeed on Facebook. The social media company gives creators control over how the Reels protection tool identifies matches as it works on automating ad campaigns.
Creators can add accounts they authorize to duplicate their content using the “allow list” to avoid automatic flagging of such Reels.
Earlier this year, social media introduced AI-powered translation for Instagram and Facebook Reels to enable creators to reach wider audiences. The social media giant has been struggling to eliminate impersonation on its platforms.
In July 2025, Meta removed about 10 million profiles that impersonated content creators. The company also took action against half a million accounts for fake engagement or spammy practices.
