Meta Debuts Instagram, Facebook Subscriptions With Extra Tools for Creators and Businesses

In Focus

  • Meta has introduced paid subscriptions for Instagram Plus users
  • Company also added Paid subscriptions to Facebook Plus and WhatsApp Plus
  • Meta is testing Meta AI plans, Meta One Plus and Meta One Premium

Meta is rolling out paid subscriptions for Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus users globally. For Meta, the paid subscriptions represent a shift in the company’s monetization strategy. Instead of relying solely on advertising revenue, the company is seeking to monetize advanced AI features and premium tools.

These subscription plans offer richer ways to express and connect across our apps, with more fun features to be added,” Meta’s Head of Product, Naomi Gleit said in an Instagram video post.

How is Meta’s Subscription Pricing Structured?

Meta announced plans to introduce subscriptions across its social platforms early this year. The social media company has customized the new “Plus” subscriptions to each platform. Meta’s subscriptions for Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus focus more on social expression. WhatsApp Plus, on the other hand, focuses on messaging and personalization.

Users who subscribe to WhatsApp Plus will have to pay $2.99 per month. The social media giant announced a $3.99 monthly fee as the subscription fee for Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus. The new plans are ideal for users who need more engagement options and audience tools within Meta applications.

Meta introduced subscription plans months after Snapchat started testing Snap creator subscriptions to diversify revenue sources. The subscription allows creators to generate recurring income from their most engaged fans.

What Features Come With Meta’s Paid Subscriptions?

Meta’s Instagram subscription focuses on creative tools, Story analytics, and profile customization. Earlier this year, the tech giant started testing Instagram Plus in selected markets. Some of the features that come with the paid Instagram subscription are:

  • Viewing rewatched data for Instagram Story
  • Unlimited access to audience lists besides Close Friends
  • Extended Stories visibility beyond the 24-hour limit
  • Weekly Story Spotlight

Meta seems to be targeting creator-focused accounts and users who actively manage public profiles. With a Facebook Plus subscription, users will have access to:

  • Audience insights
  • Social expression tools
  • Engagement insights
  • Customization tools
  • Profile personalization tools

Meta’s subscriptions for WhatsApp will give users access to features such as:

  • Custom ringtones
  • Extra pinned chats
  • Premium stickers
  • Customisation tools
  • App themes
  • Expanded personalization features

Meta Rolls Out Tests for Meta AI Plans

The social media giant has also started testing premium plans for creators, businesses and Meta AI users. The new tests, which the company calls Meta One, will serve as the social media company’s hub for subscription offerings.

The company will be testing two Meta One subscription plans for Meta AI users. These are Meta One Plus, which will be priced at $7.99 per month, and Meta One Premium at $19,99 per month. The premium plan, which will handle complex tasks, will offer users more image and video-generation capabilities.

Will the New Subscriptions Replace Verified Services?

Meta said its new “Plus” subscriptions are not part of its Verified service and will run separately. Meta Verified focused on identity validation features like impersonation protection, blue checkmarks, visibility, and priority support for businesses and creators. The “Plus” subscriptions will focus on supporting users with additional features, customization tools, social experience features, and audience insights.
