Inside Meta’s Plan to Launch an AI Tool to Detect Machine-Generated Content in Meta AI

In Focus

  • Meta’s AI detection could identify AI-generated audio, images and videos
  • The AI verification tool is under development
  • The company has not announced the tool officially yet

Meta is reportedly developing an AI detection feature for its AI chatbot. According to Gadgets360, the new feature will be able to identify content developed with the help of artificial intelligence technologies. Reports indicate that Meta’s AI detection tool is currently under development and is still not accessible to users.

Full Functions of AI Detector Remain Unknown

News about Meta’s move to develop an AI detector tool emerged after Testing Catalog shared a post on X. The post featured a screenshot of the new platform with the “AI Detector” menu option highlighted.

While details of the full functionality of the Meta AI verification tool are still scanty, it will reportedly help users detect automated or machine-generated content. This is expected to enable users to distinguish between content developed by humans and text produced by artificial intelligence using AI tools like ChatGPT.

Besides text, the Meta AI content detector is expected to identify AI-generated audio, images, and videos. It is, however, unclear whether the tool will be designed to identify content generated by all AI models or only the ones created with Meta.

Last year, Meta introduced an AI-powered voice translation feature to Instagram and Facebook users. The AI translation for Reels feature uses the voice of individual creators, enabling them to preserve their tone and style while aligning lip movement to the audio.

Meta Follows Google’s Footsteps

With the new AI-generated content verification tool, Meta could be following in the steps taken by Google. The U.S. search giant has already developed an AI-detection tool for Gemini and made the tool accessible to users.

Meta has not announced its AI detection tool officially. The fact that the tool was discovered within the code means the tool is still undergoing testing. As a general practice, tech companies test such tools internally before releasing them to users officially. As a result, the final version could differ from what has been uncovered so far.

The brand may also choose to expand the tool’s capabilities before its official launch. Recently, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said artificial intelligence would play a key role in shaping the future of social media engagement.

Meta Faces Delays in LLM Development

Meta is reportedly developing a new large language model internally codenamed “Avocado”. The new model is expected to power the company’s upcoming AI tools. However, the project has faced ongoing delays with sources claiming that its performance has yet to match that of some competing AI systems currently available in the market.

Meta is facing intense competition in the artificial intelligence race from OpenAI and Google’s Gemini. Both companies have rapidly advanced their AI models and integrated them across a range of consumer and enterprise products, raising the stakes in the generative AI space.
