Lenovo Diversifies Supply Chain with International Expansion Plans
Addressing global geopolitical challenges, Chairman of Lenovo, Yang Yuanqing said, “Lenovo will further diversify its supply chain and plans to open more manufacturing facilities outside China amid global geopolitical uncertainty.”
According to Reuters, with Trump coming into power, there will be 60% increased tariffs on Chinese imports under the CHIPS Act. This move shows Lenovo’s international expansion strategy that is aims to strengthen its supply chain.
While stressing on Lenovo’s preparedness, Yang said, “While it’s too early to predict the new U.S. administration’s policies, Lenovo has an advantage over competitors in hedging such risks through its more diversified manufacturing base and sourcing strategy, as well as balanced regional revenue streams.”
New Manufacturing Plans and International Investments
While China will continue to remain Lenovo’s primary manufacturing base, the company already operates over 30 factories across nine markets. It aims to further strengthen the position of its global factories.
In order to achieve that, Yang revealed plans to expand further. The pans included setting up Lenovo’s new global factories in Saudi Arabia, after it signed significant investment agreement with the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund.
Yang’s announcement highlighted Lenovo’s strong stand amid geopolitical risks and economic shifts.
Lenovo’s Financial Performance and Market Insights
Lenovo reported a 24% increase in Q2 profits for 2024 compared to the previous year, due to the high sales of Lenovo AI-capable computers. According to LSEG data, Lenovo posted $17.9 billion in quarterly revenue, surpassing analysts’ expectations of $16 billion, although net income stood at $359 million.
While global shipments of the PC industry declined by 2.4%, Lenovo beat the trend with a 3% rise in global shipments, maintaining a 24% market share, as per research firm IDC.
Other companies are also eyeing international expansion. For instance, Oura’s CEO, Tom Hale, announced the plans of international expansion during the Web Summit conference, stating, “The unique benefits of that maturity are in our favor. We’re expanding internationally.”
