OpenAI’s ChatGPT GPT 5.5 Instant Users Can Reference Previous Conversations

OpenAI has launched a new foundation AI model, GPT-5.5 Instant. The new model is set to become ChatGPT’s default model and will replace GPT-5.3 Instant, which the AI firm launched in March 2026. OpenAI said GPT-5.5 Instant reduces hallucination in fields like medicine, law, and finance. The AI model also maintains low latency compared to GPT-5.3 Instant.
Strong Focus on Context Management
ChatGPT’s GPT-5.5 Instant update places strong emphasis on content management. The new AI model can utilize the search tool to reference files, previous conversations, and Gmail to generate personalized responses.
“Instant is now more dependable, with significant improvements in factuality across the board and the largest gains in domains where accuracy matters most. This update makes everyday interactions more useful and more enjoyable, stronger and tighter answers across subject areas, a more natural conversational tone, and better use of the context you’ve already shared when personalization can help,” OpenAI noted in a website statement.
The new ChatGPT default model also performed better than its predecessor in internal tests. In the AIME 2025 mathematics test, the model scored 81.2, which is a notable increase from GPT-5.3 Instant’s 65.4. GPT-5.5 Instant also performed better on the MMMU-Pro benchmark which measures multimodal reasoning. The model scored 76 compared to GPT-5.3 Instant’s 69.2.
What are the Main Features of GPT-5.5 Instant?
The GPT-5.5 Instant update introduces additional features to ChatGPT. The chatbot will now display memory sources across different models, enabling users to understand where it originated responses.
Users will also have the option to delete outdated sources and even correct wrong responses. Additionally, the update allows users to share chats with other people without making memory sources visible to them. OpenAI said that GPT-5.5 Instant can also handle a wide range of repetitive tasks and even respond to STEM queries.
“GPT‑5.5 Instant is a generally smarter model that’s more capable across everyday tasks, including improvements in analyzing photo and image uploads, answering STEM-related questions, and deciding when to use web search to provide a more useful answer,” the company noted.
The ChatGPT AI model update comes two months after OpenAI started testing ads on the chatbot in the U.S. The company said ads would be visible to logged-in adult users on the Free tier and the lower-cost Go plan.
Who Can Access GPT-5.5 Instant?
The new ChatGPT search feature will be accessible to Plus and Pro users on the web, with a mobile roll out expected soon. OpenAI said it will introduce the feature to Enterprise, Go Business, and Free users in the coming weeks.
Developers can access the GPT-5.5 Instant AI model through an API as “chat-latest”. The company will continue to avail GPT 5.3 paid users for the next three months. OpenAI launched the GPT-5.5 model in April 2026. The AI firm said the model came with improved capabilities in areas such as knowledge work and coding.
