Google Supercharges Meme Creation on Photos App With New AI Tool, Me Meme

In Focus

  • The AI tool converts user photos into personalized memes
  • Users can compare the original image with the meme they generate
  • The meme generator is an experimental feature available in the U.S.

Google is bringing meme creation to the Photos app on both Android and iOS. According to Gadgets360, the new feature allows users to create memes of themselves using AI. Known as the Google Photos Me Meme, the feature leverages generative AI to convert user photos into personalized memes.

Google Positions Me Meme as Accessible

Unlike the Gemini app, Google is positioning the AI meme maker as a more accessible, guided experience. Gemini AI already lets users generate memes and images via text prompts. Google has embedded the new feature within the Create tab.

This indicates that Google might be targeting casual users who are reluctant to switch between apps or experiment with prompts. The search giant also appears to be intentional about the new AI feature.

The name of the AI feature, Me Meme, has also been carefully crafted to reflect viral, share-friendly outputs. It aligns with Google Photos’ wider strategy of positioning the Create tab as a hub for fun, AI-powered content.

Google Photos’ meme maker surfaces at a time when the tech giant is leveraging its huge customer base to stay ahead of the AI race. Recently, Google added Gemini AI features to its email service, Gmail, to make it more efficient.

How to Use Me Meme in Google Photos

Google Photos provides several features to users and also gives the option of uploading a funny picture. To create memes of themselves, user should

  • Pick a template with relatable or funny text
  • Select a selfie or photo with a visible face
  • Generate meme and customize caption
  • Save the meme in your library
  • Regenerate or share the meme

When selecting a selfie or photo, users should ensure they are well-lit, focused, and front-facing. Users can compare the original image with the meme they generate using AI and submit feedback on the output.

The Me Meme AI feature adds to a growing list of create tools available on the Photos app, including Photo to video, Create with AI, Collage, and Remix. Previously, Google has experienced a surge in usage of content creation tools like Nano Banana and Gemini 3 Pro.

Current Me Meme Access is Limited to the U.S.

Google Photos’s AI meme generator is rolling out gradually as an experimental feature. Initially, the AI tool will be available in the U.S. It’s not clear when Me MeMe might be accessible outside the U.S.

Me Meme is an optional feature that only runs on photos that users select. It does not generate memes automatically unless a user initiates the action. Memes generated using the AI tool remain in the Photos app unless a user chooses to save or share the output.

The search giant did not clarify whether memes generated using the AI tool would affect the storage limit on Google Photos. However, standard practice shows Google treats generated items as new files.
