Google Updates Maps With Gemini, Makes It More Detailed and Conversational

In Focus

  • Gemini AI update adds “Ask Maps” and “Immersive Navigation” to Google Maps
  • “Ask Maps” generates location-based recommendations for users
  • The new feature rolls out in the U.S. and India on iOS and Android

Google is bringing more AI-powered features to Google Maps as it pushes artificial intelligence tools deeper into its products. According to TechCrunch, the tech giant is adding “Ask Maps” and “Immersive Navigation” to Google Maps. The“Ask Maps” feature comes with a chatbot that enables users to ask complex queries in natural language.

Users Can Use Ask Maps to Plan Trips

Google Maps AI assistant will also help users to plan trips. This means users can prompt the AI navigation assistant to provide directions. For instance, a user can ask, “I’m headed to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes, any recommended stops along the way?”

Ask Maps” will generate personalized responses based on previous searches and tips provided by real people so the user can convert travel plans into action.

“By bringing together the world’s freshest map with our most capable Gemini models, we’re transforming exploration into a simple conversation and making driving more intuitive,” Google Maps VP, Miriam Daniel stated in a blog post.

The “Ask Maps” feature can also suggest convenient options for users. For instance, a user might prompt the chatbot with a query such as “My friends are coming from Midtown East to meet me after work. Any cozy spots with a table for four at 7 tonight?”

The AI assistant can utilize the information saved in the user’s account to generate location-based AI recommendations based on their preference. Google integrates Gemini AI to Maps a day after the tech giant upgraded its Workspace apps.

Gemini AI Brings 3D Views to Maps

Like Apple Maps, the “Immersive Navigation” feature gives Maps a 3D view of the terrain, overpasses, and buildings. The feature highlights road details including lanes, traffic lights, crosswalks, and stop signs to keep drivers better informed.

The updated Maps feature offers drivers a wider view of their route. Using smart zoom and transparent buildings, it helps them see farther ahead and prepare for tricky turns or lane changes in advance.

Google started rolling out Gemini navigation features in Maps in November 2025. Currently, the “Ask Maps” feature is rolling out in the U.S. and India on both iOS and Android platforms. Google plans to make the feature available on desktops in the coming weeks.

What the AI Upgrade in Maps Means for Google

The upgrade is part of Google’s wider strategy to differentiate Gemini models from competitors. It’s also part of the company’s plan to retain its customers as the AI race heats up.

Google Maps generates revenue by promoting placements and selling ads to businesses. The tech giant also charges enterprises to access its location data and Maps APIs.

But the company does not plan to include ads on Maps for now. Currently, Google Maps has over 2 billion monthly users. This huge user base makes it the world’s leading navigation app.
