Google Lowers Free Gmail Storage for New Accounts in Latest Tests

In Focus

  • Google allocates 5GB to new Gmail accounts with no verified phone numbers
  • New accounts with verified phone numbers still get 15GB of storage
  • Tech giant says storage tests are aimed at improving data recovery
  • Google is testing a new storage for new accounts in select regions

Google could reduce the free storage space for personal Gmail accounts. Several Gmail users have noted that the tech company is testing lower storage limits for new accounts compared to the usual 15GB. Storage space for Gmail accounts is often shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

Why is Google Capping Gmail Storage?

Google, which recently added Gemini AI features to Gmail, has been providing 15GB of cloud storage for users who sign up for email accounts. The company is reportedly experimenting various ways to discourage people from creating multiple Gmail accounts to gain additional free cloud storage space.

Most users choose to set up multiple Gmail accounts as a way of bypassing storage limitations rather than upgrading to paid Google One subscriptions. The free tier plan became the tech company’s largest consumer advantage as cloud storage expanded alongside smartphones and high-resolution media.

Should the tech company scale back Gmail account storage for new users, it could push account holders who need additional storage into subscribing to Google One. Google seems to be limiting free storage to 5GB for new Gmail accounts unless users add phone contact to their accounts. Users who verify their contact get the standard 15GB of free storage.

Storage Tests to Improve Service Quality

Analysts suggest that the decision may be linked to increasing infrastructure costs and a growing misuse of free accounts. However, Google said the tests are aimed at providing quality storage services to users.

We’re testing a new storage policy for new accounts created in select regions that will help us continue to provide a high-quality storage service to our users, while encouraging users to improve their account security and data recovery,” a company spokesperson stated as cited by Android Authority.

The tech giant is testing new gmail account storage limits months after introducing the Verified Email feature on Android. The tool supports instant user email address confirmation on apps using a secure credential stored within the device.

No Formal Announcement from Google Yet

Google has not announced the free Gmail storage change officially. The company has also not confirmed whether the reported 5GB limit is part of a wider rollout or a limited experiment.

Google is testing Gmail storage limits at a time when the cost of cloud storage has been rising due to high demand to support AI processing, backups, video uploads, and high-volumes of data storage requirements.

The move also comes at a time when leading tech companies are exploring ways to turn free users into paying subscribers. Recently, Meta started testing a new subscription service, Instagram Plus, in selected countries. The premium subscription service allows subscribers to access exclusive features while generating more revenue for the social media giant.
