Google Launches a Data Transfer Feature to Pull Conversations from Rival AI Platforms to Gemini

In Focus

  • Google enables users to import chats and memories from rival AI apps
  • Feature reduces switching friction between major chatbot platforms
  • Supports large chat uploads and summarized memory transfer workflows

Google has introduced a data transfer feature, enabling users to import conversation histories and personal context from competing AI platforms directly into Gemini. The update targets a practical barrier in enterprise AI adoption, the reluctance to switch tools when accumulated data cannot move with the user.

The rollout is part of a wider effort to reduce friction in AI platform adoption. It reflects the company’s broader push to deepen Gemini’s integration across professional workflows.

How Users Can Import Chats and Memory Data

The new functionality enables users to import chats from other AI apps through structured workflows. One method involves generating a prompt in Gemini, which users paste into another chatbot to retrieve a summary of their preferences and history. This output is then added back into Gemini to recreate context.

Additionally, users can upload exported chat files, including large datasets, directly into the platform. This approach ensures that both summarized memory and full conversation archives can be transferred, depending on user needs and data availability.

Google had earlier tested the Gemini import AI chats feature in select regions, allowing users to transfer conversations from platforms like ChatGPT and Claude. During the testing phase, the company gathered user feedback on importing both summarized memory and full chat histories.

This trial helped refine the workflows for migrating AI conversations to Gemini, ensuring smoother data transfer and better context preservation in the current rollout.

Google Search Live Expands Global Access

In parallel, Google is also rolling out the Search Live feature worldwide, delivering real-time updates for news, stock prices, sports scores, and trending topics. Search Live “helps people stay on top of events as they unfold,” offering dynamic, up-to-date information in search results.

By combining this with Gemini, users can reference the latest developments while interacting with their imported AI chat histories. The integration enhances responsiveness and ensures conversations remain informed by current events, complementing the data transfer functionality.

Feature Limitations and Strategic Significance

Despite its utility, Google Gemini’s data transfer feature comes with constraints. It is currently limited to desktop users and excludes enterprise and underage accounts. The process requires manual input, such as copying prompts or uploading files. Nevertheless, it represents a strategic move to reduce user lock-in and support migration of AI conversations to Gemini.

By integrating imported AI memories into Workspace apps, Google Gemini allows users to generate documents and manage tasks efficiently using AI knowledge carried from other platforms.

As AI platforms compete for adoption, features that allow users to retain personal context and integrate real-time search updates could become a decisive factor in platform preference.
