Google Makes Workspace Apps Smarter with Gemini AI Upgrade

In Focus

  • Google’s AI productivity features help users to complete tasks faster
  • Gemini retrieves information from Drive, Chat, Gmail and the web
  • The new features are available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers

Google is adding Gemini AI features to Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. According to TechCrunch, the new features will enable users to perform tasks like formatting slides and sheets faster. Gemini AI for Google Docs and Sheets will complete such tasks based on information that users have in their Chat, Gmail, and Drive.

The main aim of Google’s Gemini AI productivity features is to personalize the applications while enabling them to help users complete tasks faster without having to switch to a separate tool or chatbot. Google brings AI features to Docs and Drive months after adding Gemini to its email service, Gmail.

Gemini Update Brings New Tools to Docs

Following the Gemini AI update, Google has added a “Help me create” tool in Docs. With this tool, users can describe what they wish to develop. Using the prompt, Gemini AI collects information from Gmail, Drive, and Chat and produces an initial draft of the user.

Users can use Google Workspace Gemini AI assistant to refine specific sections of the draft. The tech giant has also added “Help me write” to Google Docs, enabling users to add details or improve clarity in the drafts they generate.

For collaborating teams, the “Match writing style” feature allows users to make the voice and tone consistent throughout a document. Using the “Match the format” tool, Docs users can mirror the style and structure of another document.

Sheets Becomes a Collaborative Platform

Gemini’s AI document and spreadsheet generation features have also turned Sheets into a collaborative platform. Users can collate relevant data from Gmail, Drive, and Chat and generate fully formatted spreadsheets with a single prompt.

The “Fill with Gemini” tool allows users to instantly generate, categorize and summarize data. The feature also enables them to extract information from Google Search in real-time.

For instance, instead of searching application deadlines and tuition fees for different colleges manually, a user can create column headers and ask Gemini to populate the spreadsheet automatically from the web.

News about Gemini AI features in Sheets comes weeks after the tech giant made the model a default feature in Search. With this update, Google allowed users to seamlessly transition from AI Overviews to AI Mode.

Gemini AI Also Powers Drive and Slides

Google has also integrated Gemini into Drive. This update allows users to search files using natural language. In Drive, Gemini will present search results in an AI Overview-like style.

In Slides, Gemini AI can generate editable presentations that match the overall theme of a user. Users can also prompt the AI assistant to match colors or minimize it to their liking. Google plans to improve Slides further to enable it to create presentations from a single prompt.

The new features roll out immediately to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. For Docs, Sheets, and Slides, the features are available in English globally.
