Google’s New Update Makes Gemini 3 A Default Feature in AI Search

In Focus

  • Google has made transition from AI Overviews to AI Mode Seamless
  • AI Overview provides detailed responses to complex and longer queries
  • The search giant is rolling out the enhanced AI Search across devices globally

Google has made Gemini 3 a default feature in AI Overviews and AI Mode in the most recent update. The tech giant has also simplified the transition from AI Overviews to AI Mode. According to Gadgets360, the Google AI Overviews update is rolling out the new capabilities across devices and interfaces globally.

New Update Makes Search Effortless

Google’s AI Mode update aligns with the company’s vision for Search, which is to enable users to explore, access, and understand information effortlessly. By making Gemini 3 the default model for AI summaries globally, Google will allow users to view detailed responses to complicated or longer queries in AI Overview.

We’re making Gemini 3 the new default model for AI Overviews globally, so you get a best-in-class AI response right on the search results page, for questions where it’s helpful,” Google Search VP of Product, Robby Stein noted in a blog post.

With Google’s Gemini 3 AI model running on AI Overviews, users can ask follow-up questions from search summaries and move straight into AI Mode. The interaction in AI Mode becomes conversational and feels like an ongoing chat. Users don’t have to repeat themselves or retype the full context because the system remembers what they had asked and builds on it.

Google said this design was influenced by the feedback gathered from users during the testing phase.

In our testing, we’ve found that people prefer an experience that flows naturally into a conversation, and that asking follow-up questions while keeping the context from AI Overviews makes Search more helpful,” Stein wrote on the Google website.

How Transition from Overviews to AI Mode Works

Users only need to click the “Show More” button on AI Overviews to shift to AI Mode. This transition is seamless because Google overlays AI Mode directly over search results. Users can exit AI Mode and revert to AI Overviews search summaries by clicking the close button at the top right of the screen. Exiting AI Mode removes all sources from the screen.

The latest Google Search improvements differ from the update that the tech company announced two weeks ago. The search company had announced that Gemini 3 Pro would power AI Overviews for complex queries in English for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers globally.

Why the AI Overviews Update Matters

Powering AI Overviews with Gemini 3, which launched on the Gemini app last month, enables Google to provide quality responses to users. At a time when Google is seeking to drive AI usage by leveraging its huge user base, rolling out follow-up question capabilities will drive searchers to AI Mode.

This will likely be a big deal for publishers because it will reduce the traffic to their pages. With AI Overviews showing up at the top of search research results, it’s hard for publishers to get clicks from citation cards. With the transition to AI Mode becoming seamless, publishers will find it harder to drive traffic to their websites.
