Google Links AI Overview to AI Mode in Search, Runs Global Tests
In Focus
- Google is making it easier for users to switch from AI Overview to AI Mode
- Users will be able to conduct in-depth search without switching interfaces
- Linking AI Overview to AI Mode could grow Gemini AI monthly usage to 2 billion
Google is testing a new feature that links AI Overview to AI Mode in Search. According to Storyboard18, linking the two would enable users to conduct deeper conversational searches without having to switch interfaces. Google tests global AI Mode at a time when OpenAI is focusing its resources on improving user experience on ChatGPT as competition heats up.
Transition From AI Overview to AI Mode Gets Seamless
With Google’s AI integrated search, users can transition from basic search result summaries on AI Overview to a conversational interface for in-depth, follow-up questions. Previously, users had to determine whether they wanted a straightforward response or in-depth search before entering a query. With the search AI integration announcement, Google eliminates the need for users to select the AI Mode tab manually.
“Today we’re starting to test a new way to seamlessly go deeper in AI Mode directly from the Search results page on mobile, globally. You shouldn’t have to think about where or how to ask your question,” VP of Product for Google Search Robby Stein said in a post shared on X.
Google has used AI Overview to reshape online search by providing quick, realistic answers directly in search results. Stein explained that the tool will be available to users as a helpful starting point, but AI Mode in Search would support conversational follow-up questions from the same interface.
“This brings us closer to our vision for Search: just ask whatever’s on your mind, no matter how long or complex, and find exactly what you need,” Stein added.
How AI Overview-AI Mode Transition Works
Google is currently testing the new design on mobile devices. Users can transition to AI Mode in Search interface by simply:
- Tapping the “Show more” button on AI Overview
- AI Mode in Search interface opens
- Ask follow-up questions from the “Ask anything” bar at the bottom of the screen
In other news, Google has started to roll out Gemini 3 Pro and Nano Banana Pro in about 120 countries and territories in English following the U.S. launch. The company launched AI Mode in Search in May 2025 for U.S. users and in August 2025 for global users. The AI-powered tool enables users to interact with Gemini, similarly as ChatGPT.
Significant Growth in Gemini Monthly User Base
Google’s AI test on global users comes at a time when Gemini usage has grown to over 650 million monthly users as of November 2025. This usage has been driven by multiple Gemini improvements, including the launch of the Nano Banana Pro image model.
Last week, Google introduced Nano Banana Pro and Gemini 3 Pro limits for free-tier subscribers after usage surged following the launch of the two models. By merging AI Mode in Search and AI Overviews, Google could grow its Gemini monthly user base to 2 billion, a move that could give the online search company a significant advantage in consumer adoption.
