London-based fintech company GoCardless has confirmed plans to open a new office in Leeds, marking a significant step in its UK expansion strategy. According to UK Tech News, this office will serve as the company’s northern hub, complementing its existing locations in London and Riga. The move underscores Leeds’s position as a prominent centre for fintech and professional services, offering a strategic advantage for businesses seeking regional growth opportunities.
The Leeds office is scheduled to open later this year, with an initial workforce target of 50 staff within 12 months. The site will primarily focus on technology, product development, and client support, supporting GoCardless UK expansion across the northern region. By establishing a GoCardless Northern Hub in Leeds, the company aims to strengthen its operational efficiency and local engagement with professional services clients, further embedding itself in the city’s growing financial ecosystem. In other news, Google is set to make a $6.8 billion (£5 billion) investment in the U.K.
CEO Hiroki Takeuchi highlighted the significance of Leeds for the company’s growth strategy. “It was a natural choice for our Northern Hub and with the introduction of the Leeds Reforms, this dynamic ecosystem will only grow. We’re excited to become a key player in this fintech hot spot, tapping into a rich talent pool while also providing closer, more local support to our customers and partners across the region,” he stated in a press release.
The initiative aligns with the UK government’s Leeds Reforms, introduced in July, which aim to simplify financial regulations, increase regional investment, and encourage businesses to expand outside London. Also, North East England is to become an important hub for the North East AI Growth Zone development, as large-scale investments are announced to advance the region’s technological infrastructure.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves also welcomed the expansion. “I am delighted to see the plans for GoCardless to set up their new office in Leeds, delivering good, high-skilled jobs across the region,” said Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
“Just a few months ago I set out our Leeds Reforms, the plans to make the UK the top destination for financial services businesses by tearing down barriers to investment. We have brought stability back to the country, now we’ll build an economy that delivers for, and rewards, working people.”
The establishment of a GoCardless new office in Leeds not only strengthens the company’s national footprint but also contributes to the wider development of the UK’s fintech sector. By situated a northern hub in Leeds, GoCardless reinforces its accessibility to regional talent, ensures proximity to professional services clients, and enhances operational resilience. This expansion illustrates a growing trend among fintech companies to diversify their geographic presence beyond London while leveraging the city’s established talent pool and business infrastructure.
