Figma Supercharges AI-Powered Design With Image Editing Update

In Focus

  • Figma’s image editing tools can remove, expand, and isolate images
  • With the latest update, Figma users get access to improved lasso selection tool
  • The design platform also added the image extension feature to its design suite

Collaborative design platform Figma has unveiled new AI image editing features. According to TechCrunch, Figma’s AI object removal update comes with new features, including tools for removing, isolating, and expanding images. The new update is designed to save users the hassle of exporting images for editing, then importing them back to the platform.

What Does Figma’s New Update Entail?

In 2025, Figma’s new features come with improvements to its lasso selection tool. These improvements enable users to select an image, remove it, and even isolate it. During isolation, the image retains important characteristics like color and background.

Figma’s AI image object removal tools enable users to select objects and adjust factors such as shadow, color, lighting, and focus. The latest update also brings the Figma image extension feature to its design suite. With this tool, users can adjust their creative content to particular formats and add backgrounds, among other details.

The tool keeps users from spending time on image cropping and adjusting elements such as lighting and color within images. Figma rolled out AI-powered editing tools months after the company issued 37 million in an IPO where it raised $1.2 billion.

A Toolbar for All Image Editing Features

The collaborative design platform is offering users easy access to its image editing features by placing them in a single toolbar. One of the tools that Figma is bringing to the toolbar is object removal, which competitors like Canva and Adobe have had for a long time.

From the toolbar, Figma users can:

  • Change the background color of images
  • Select objects or sections of images
  • Add text or annotations to images
  • Remove backgrounds from images

The new image editing features are accessible to users on Figma Design and Draw. The design platform plans to extend them across its platform in 2026.

Competition in AI-Powered Image Generation

In recent months, design firms like Figma, Adobe, and Canva have been rushing to unveil AI-powered image generators in a bid to stay ahead of the competition. In April 2025, Adobe launched Firefly, an AI-powered image generation app that makes design tools accessible to ad creatives.

Recently, Adobe deepened its investment in multi-model generative AI by integrating Google’s Gemini 3 Nano Banana Pro into Adobe Firefly and Photoshop. This integration offers users an expanded set of AI image generation and editing capabilities.

While acknowledging that AI models like Google’s Nano Banana are great for creating images, Figma said users still need granular tools to edit their work without using text prompts. Figma released its AI object removal update on the same day that Adobe added similar features to ChatGPT.

Although the design platform had partnered with ChatGPT in October 2025, it remains unclear whether its newest features will be available to users who use Figma within the OpenAI chatbot.
