In Focus
Elon Musk has unveiled an early version of Grokipedia, an online AI-powered encyclopedia. According to CNBC, the website crashed temporarily following Grokipedia’s launch but was restored hours later.
The new AI-powered encyclopedia, Grokipedia is named after Grok, xAI’s large language model. Musk has touted the encyclopedia as the less biased version of Wikipedia, the popular, free web-based platform.
xAI launched Grokipedia barely a month after Musk announced that he was developing a site to compete with Wikipedia following a suggestion from David Sacks.
President Donald Trump nominated Sacks as the White House AI advisor and crypto czar in December 2024 after creating a Presidential Tech Council.
In a post shared on X, Musk said the launch features Grokipedia version 0.1. He added that “version 1.0 will be 10X better”.
The new online encyclopedia comes with a dark background and a search bar. Users can change the background to light mode and create an account. To use the site, one has to conduct a search.
Search results are displayed on a page that resembles Wikipedia. While there are no images, the content is organized in chapters, headings, and references. Currently, Grokipedia features 885,279 articles compared to over 7 million articles available on Wikipedia’s English version.
The new encyclopedia appears to generate articles solely using AI. This is not the case with Wikipedia, whose articles are written and edited by a volunteer community of writers and editors.
Grokipedia marks xAI’s latest attempt to integrate chatbots into Musk’s projects following integration of Grok on social media platform, X. Earlier this month, xAI unveiled Grok Imagine v0.9, an AI video tool for enterprise and professional users seeking fast, high-quality multimedia outputs.
A Quick Preview of Grokipedia’s Launch
xAI says Grokipedia is an open-source platform. Like Wikipedia, anyone can use the application for any purpose at no cost. This aligns with the decision that xAI took in August 2025 when it open-sourced Grok 2.5 on Hugging Face.
xAI’s goal is to offer users an alternative as it provides what it calls a less biased version of Wikipedia. Musk has repeatedly stated that Wikipedia has not been objective and that it displays left-wing political bias.
In response, the Wikipedia Foundation says investigations conducted for over 25 years have not proven nor generated reliable evidence to support this claim.
“Wikipedia is not perfect, but it is and remains the largest freely accessible and transparent source of reliable and verifiable knowledge,” the foundation said.
