Google’s Latest Chrome Update Gives Android Tablets a Proper Bookmarks Bar
In Focus
- The Chrome version 146 bookmarks bar shows icons, names, and bookmark folders
- Toggle control and overflow options make navigation easier on tablets and foldables
- Google’s broader browser and AI feature upgrades aim to enhance productivity
Google is bringing a desktop-style bookmarks bar to Chrome on Android, with the feature now rolling out across tablets and foldable devices. According to The Indian Express, the feature is part of version 146 of the Chrome for Android update and places a bookmarks strip directly below the Omnibox.
This marks a significant Chrome UI update that Android tablet users have long requested.
How It Works and Activation
To activate the bookmarks bar, users must:
- Update to the latest Chrome release,
- Open Settings → Appearance,
- Enable the “Show bookmarks bar” toggle
The bar displays site icons and text labels, and supports organized folders that expand inline.
On some devices, force stopping and reopening the app may be necessary for the toggle to appear. When users have more bookmarks than available space, a chevron lets them reveal additional items, streamlining access to frequently visited sites without opening menus.
The bookmarks bar is currently limited to devices with larger displays, so regular phones retain the traditional bookmarks access through menus.
Broader Browser Enhancements and AI Integration
Google’s ongoing efforts to evolve Chrome extend beyond bookmarks. The company has been integrating advanced AI capabilities into the browser through its Gemini AI platform, which lets users query and summarise content without leaving the current tab.
Analysts note that features such as “Gemini in Chrome” transform the browser into a productivity interface rather than just a navigation tool, bridging search, communication, and task execution more efficiently. Meanwhile, the auto disable notification feature previously introduced reflects Google’s focus on giving users finer control over their browsing experience by muting alerts from rarely visited sites.
Google’s Bigger Play: Bridging Desktop and Mobile
The addition of the Chrome Android bookmarks bar and related enhancements reinforces Google’s strategy to unify desktop like functionality with mobile convenience.
These moves align with broader trends in browser evolution, where usability improvements and embedded intelligence can drive user engagement, enterprise adoption, and competitive differentiation across the web and mobile ecosystem.
