ChatGPT Down for Thousands Worldwide as OpenAI Scrambles to Investigate
In Focus
- ChatGPT and Codex went down simultaneously, hitting users across the US, UK, and India
- Over 5,000 outage reports were filed on Downdetector within the first hour of the disruption
- Users faced errors spanning login failures, broken conversations, voice mode, and image generation
- OpenAI confirmed a “partial outage” and said it was investigating, but offered no root cause
ChatGPT went down on Monday, April 20, 2026, leaving thousands of users unable to access the platform. As confirmed by OpenAI’s official status page, the disruption affected the chatbot’s web interface, mobile app, and the AI coding platform Codex.
OpenAI’s system status page confirmed ongoing issues, with some users unable to log in, search, use voice mode, and other wide-ranging services. The company acknowledged it was investigating but had not explained what triggered the failure.
How Bad Was the ChatGPT Outage?
Downdetector, which tracks outages by aggregating status reports from multiple sources, began recording a sharp spike in complaints starting around 10:05 AM ET. Reports went from under 1,000 to above 5,000 in roughly 30 minutes, a steep escalation that reflects how central ChatGPT has become to daily workflows.
In the UK, over 7,600 reports came in, compared to around 1,700 in the US at the same window. In India, hundreds of complaints formed a significant share of total reports, with disruptions affecting both web and mobile usage at peak outage time.
What Errors Were Users Seeing?
The “ChatGPT something went wrong” error was among the most widely reported symptoms during the outage. Those already logged in mostly saw problems with conversations and image generation, while others were simply locked out at the login screen.
The incident was marked as a “partial outage,” with a wide set of features affected, including conversations, login, voice mode, and image generation. ChatGPT mobile app login issues were particularly disruptive for on-the-go users who rely on the app for quick queries and professional tasks.
OpenAI’s Official Response
OpenAI’s status page stated, “We are investigating the issue for the listed services. Impacted users are currently unable to access ChatGPT, Codex and API Platform.” Beyond that, the company offered little.
OpenAI had also applied a separate mitigation for ChatGPT Business users who were facing issues while upgrading plans or adding seats, and was monitoring recovery on that front. Many users and observers noted that the company was slow to provide meaningful updates as the disruption unfolded.
This Is Not the First Time
Questions about whether ChatGPT is down right now have come up more than once in 2026. This is the second outage OpenAI has faced within the year. In March, ChatGPT went down for thousands of users, with issues peaking around 2 AM IST.
At the time, OpenAI cited elevated error rates affecting conversations before restoring operations, but did not disclose the root cause. The pattern has raised questions about whether the platform’s infrastructure can keep pace with its rapidly growing user base.
What OpenAI Owes Users After Every Outage
With millions of professionals, developers, and students depending on the platform daily, even a short outage carries real costs in lost productivity. The ChatGPT Codex outage details are particularly notable given how heavily developers rely on it for agentic coding workflows. Until OpenAI releases a transparent post-incident analysis, the trust question will linger, especially for enterprise customers who need guaranteed uptime to justify their investment.
