  • The company builds “world AI models” which can learn from video, images, and audios

U.S.-based video generation startup Luma AI is expanding to London, CNBC reported. Backed by NVIDIA, Luma AI’s London expansion comes two weeks after announcing a $900 million Series C funding round that pushed its valuation up to $4 billion.

Luma AI’s Plan to Scale its AI Models

Luma AI’s latest funding round was led by Humain, an AI firm owned by the Saudi Public Investment fund. The company plans to use the funding to scale its AI models and expand operations to different parts of the world.

“With this Series C raise and the upcoming build-out of global compute infrastructure, we have the capital and capacity to bring world-scale AI to creatives everywhere. Launching across Europe and the Middle East is the logical next step in putting this power directly in the hands of storytellers, agencies and brands globally,” Luma AI CEO and co-founder Amit Jain said as per CNBC.

NVIDIA-backed Luma AI develops a class of artificial intelligence known as “world models”, which are capable of learning from images, videos, audio, and text. World models are used by large language models such as those that power Google’s Gemini and ChatGPT, and are considered critical in achieving artificial general intelligence.

Currently, the AI startup is targeting sectors like media, advertising, entertainment, and marketing with its video generation models. Luma AI uses two avenues to sell its models, as a content creation suite and through an application programming interface (API).

Why is Luma AI Expanding to the U.K.?

Luma AI launches offices in the U.K. about three months after American tech companies committed to make multi-billion AI investments in the country. These investments were part of the U.K.-U.S. tech prosperity deal that established partnerships in AI, civil nuclear energy, and quantum computing. Increasingly, the U.K. is becoming a preferred destination for technology firms due to its growing talent and its strategic location as an entry to the EU market.

“London has some of the best people when it comes to research, given the universities here and institutions like DeepMind. We also consider London to be the entry point to the European market,” Jain added as per CNBC.

The company will be hiring about 200 employees for its London AI startup hub by the start of 2027. To support Luma AI’s growth in Europe, the tech startup will be seeking expertise in different fields, including engineering, research, strategic development, and partnership management.

Growing Focus on the U.K. and Europe

Luma AI becomes the latest U.S.-based AI lab to expand to the U.K. and Europe in a bid to leverage talent and the revenue opportunities in the region. Anthropic has also announced plans to open offices in Munich and Paris, months after creating 100 new roles in its London and Dublin offices.

Major American technology companies like OpenAI and NVIDIA also plan to make major investments in the U.K. The investments were aimed at expanding advanced data centers across different strategic locations in the country.
