Apple Introduces Agentic Coding in Xcode 26.3, Adds Anthropic and OpenAI Integrations
In Focus
- Apple uses Xcode to create and test apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV
- Xcode 26.3 is currently available in beta version
- The agentic coding capabilities in Xcode 26.3 will make app creation faster
Apple is deepening AI capabilities in its integrated development environment, Xcode. The tech giant uses this environment to build almost every iPhone app. According to Gadgets360, Apple is unlocking agentic coding with the release of Xcode 26.3. Apple’s Xcode agentic coding allows developers to fast-track software development by handling time-consuming, or repetitive tasks.
“Developers can leverage coding agents, including Anthropic’s Claude Agent and OpenAI’s Codex, directly in Xcode to tackle complex tasks autonomously, helping them develop apps faster than ever,” Apple stated in a blog post.
Xcode AI Integration Supports ChatGPT Access
Apple announced the Xcode 26.3 AI agents integration during the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The integration was expected to give users access to ChatGPT or other AI models to assist with coding and debugging among other tasks.
“At Apple, our goal is to make tools that put industry-leading technologies directly in developers’ hands so they can build the very best apps. Agentic coding supercharges productivity and creativity, streamlining the development workflow so developers can focus on innovation,” Apple VP for Worldwide Relations, Susan Prescott noted in the company blog post.
Xcode 26.3 builds on the intelligence features that Apple had launched in Xcode 26. With the new AI update, Xcode will work alongside AI coding agents to complete complex tasks that ordinarily involve multiple manual steps. The Xcode 26.3 update allows AI agents to develop and test apps, search Apple’s documentation, and fix bugs.
Apple added AI agents to Xcode soon after it acquired an Israel-based AI startup called Q.ai, to enhance its audio technology capabilities. The acquisition highlighted Apple’s commitment to invest in AI-driven innovations.
Xcode 26.3 Can Complete Complex Tasks
With Xcode 26.3, the iPhone maker is integrating Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol. The protocol is an open standard that enables the platform to connect with AI agents. Xcode has been supporting ChatGPT and Claude since June 2025.
However, the integration was limited to query responses and code suggestions. The latest Anthropic Claude agent integration allows AI to complete tasks like editing files, running tests, updating project settings, and searching documents within Xcode, without regular human input.
This approach, which is known as vibe coding, has gained traction among programmers. Instead of writing every line of code, developers describe what they want and AI generates the code.
Apple’s Push to Boost App Development
Apple introduces agentic coding at a time when it is reviewing its broader AI strategy. While the company has experienced delays in rolling out Apple Intelligence, it appears to be fast-tracking AI tools for developers. Recently, Apple signed a major deal with Google to power Siri with Gemini.
Registered Apple developers can access a beta version of Xcode 26.3. Wider release on the App Store expected in the coming weeks. To start using Xcode Codex and Claude, developers will have to link their Anthropic and OpenAI accounts using an API key.
