Apple Reportedly Automates Safari Tab Grouping Feature With AI

In Focus

  • The tab grouping feature will be powered by Apple Intelligence
  • The Safari AI update automatically places open tabs into groups of similar categories
  • Apple will reportedly launch the feature during the WWDC 2026 event

Apple is reportedly testing a new feature, automatic tab grouping, on the Safari browser. The feature will build on the Tab Groups tool that already exists on Mac devices. Apple is expected to launch the new AI-powered Safari tab grouping feature in its upcoming OS updates for iPad, iPhone, and Mac Computers.

New AI-Powered Feature Automates Browsing Experience

Apple’s Safari automatic tab grouping feature will reportedly be powered by Apple Intelligence. By integrating AI into its tab groups, Apple is looking to deliver automation experience for Safari browser users. The macOS 27 Safari AI update places open tabs into groups of similar categories.

For instance, the feature can organize Facebook, X, and Instagram tabs in a social media websites group. It can automatically place YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix tabs in the streaming category. Apple Intelligence will reportedly organize tabs depending on how frequently they are used.

The new feature works like the organization tools on Google Chrome. Other AI-powered browsers like Perplexity Comet, Opera, and Firefox use similar features to improve browsing experiences for users. The tab grouping feature available on the current version of Safari through iPadOS 26, iOS 26, AND MacOS 26 is not powered by AI.

New Update Supports Switchable Groupings

An important aspect of the upcoming Safari automatic tab organization feature is the ability to control tab groupings. Users will be able to switch from manual to automated tab grouping depending on their preference.

Apple has not labeled its organization feature yet. However, Safari will display the message “tabs will group into topics you browse” when a user selects the grouping option. The company first introduced tab groups to Safari in 2021 through iPadOS 15, macOS 12 Monterey, and iOS 15. The feature launched alongside features like creating, moving, and renaming the Tap Groups,

The iOS 27 Safari Update will be among the various software changes that Apple will be launching at the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2026 next month. Apple is expected to release other updates at the conference as part of its broader AI strategy,

These include AI-powered iOS 27 with expanded ChatGPT-based capabilities and ability to allow users to select their preferred AI model. Apple will also be updating Visual Intelligence in iOS 27 and integrating AI into its Photos app.

What More to Expect At the WWDC

Apple did not state whether its automatic tab groupings feature will run in-device or in the cloud. Observers will be looking to hear more about this during the WWDC keynote and the initial developer betas released thereafter.

Observers will also be looking to learn more about public API changes or new Safari extension hooks for tab groups, and privacy and data-flow descriptions in Apple’s developer notes or privacy whitepapers. Additionally, implications of privacy, data residency, and extension-compatibility cannot be verified until the company publishes technical notes or releases the necessary documentation.
