Apple Controls Gemini-Siri Integration, Branding in Google AI Deal

In Focus

  • Apple will fine-tune Gemini AI for Siri
  • Gemini responses on Siri will not be branded
  • User data will not be passed on to Google

Apple is partnering with Google to make Gemini models and cloud systems the foundation for Apple Intelligence. According to Hindustan Times, the iPhone maker will have more control in shaping and managing Google’s AI technology on its platform, which includes the Gemini-Siri integration, than previously thought.

Apple to Customize Gemini Responses

Apple will reportedly maintain tighter control over the way Gemini works within its ecosystem than it did with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Following Apple’s AI partnership with Google, the upgraded Siri version will be powered by Gemini.

As Google provides the underlying AI model, Apple will fine-tune Gemini for Siri. The iPhone maker will have the leeway to customize Gemini single-handedly to generate responses that suit its preferences and standards.

Sources close to the tech companies say that Apple will have the option of asking Google to make specific changes to Gemini. Even with this option, the iPhone maker will be able to handle most of the adjustments without Google’s assistance.

Reports indicate that Siri will leverage Gemini’s capabilities to boost its performance in generating responses to queries that relate to world knowledge. This means users will receive actual information as opposed to links to sources.

Gemini is also expected to power Siri’s responses to emotional queries, enabling it to generate conversational responses the way other AI chatbots do. Apple had previously considered powering the voice assistant with OpenAI or Anthropic AI models.

No Branding on Gemini Responses

Another major aspect of the partnership is that Apple will use Gemini AI without branding the information in responses. Currently, Siri refers queries to ChatGPT. The OpenAI chatbot displays clear visuals and text indicators that show that the responses have been powered by ChatGPT. This will not apply to the Gemini case.

“In the current prototype of Apple’s Gemini-based system, AI answers don’t include any branding related to Google or Gemini,” One of the sources said, as cited by 9to5mac.com.

Apple Maintains Control of User Data

While announcing the AI partnership, Apple and Google said that Gemini will run on Apple devices via the Private Cloud Compute system. Apple uses this cloud intelligence system to run its AI features on the cloud, while maintaining the same level of privacy and security as data stored on the iPhone.

The Cupertino-based tech giant is maintaining this setup in its AI deal with Google to ensure that user data does not pass on to the search giant. Apple is also expected to apply a hybrid approach with Google’s AI technology.

This means that basic on-device capabilities in Siri, like sending texts or setting a timer, will be merged with a system that can support responses to more complex queries. Apple’s Gemini-powered AI features will be rolled out gradually.
