Anthropic Secures Additional Compute Capacity in 300 Megawatt SpaceX Deal

In Focus

  • Anthropic will access the compute capacity from the Colossus 1 data center
  • The AI firm has doubled Claude Code limits for paid subscribers following the deal
  • The company has also removed peak hour limits on Claude Code for Max and Pro accounts

Anthropic has inked a compute deal with SpaceX. Under the Anthropic SpaceX partnership, the AI firm will access an additional 300 megawatt in processing power. Anthropic also announced plans to double its five-hour rate limit for Claude Code. The company is eliminating the peak hour limit reduction and increasing limits for application programming interface (API) for Claude Opus models.

What are the Details of the Anthropic SpaceX Deal

The Anthropic SpaceX compute deal paves the way for the AI company to use the capacity at the Colossus 1 data center. The data center specifically focuses on AI training and is located in Memphis, Tennessee. The AI firm said it will access the compute capacity this month.

We’ve signed an agreement with SpaceX to use all of the compute capacity at their Colossus 1 data center. This gives us access to more than 300 megawatts of new capacity within the month,” Anthropic noted in a company statement.

Colossus 1, which started operations in July 2024, was built by xAI in 122 days. It is powered by over 220,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs. Anthropic signed an AI data center deal with SpaceX weeks after it partnered with Amazon to secure compute capacity to train and deploy artificial intelligence models. Under the $25 billion Amazon deal, the Claude Code developer will purchase compute capacity worth $100 billion from AWS over the next decade.

New Capacity Will Benefit Paid Claude Code Subscribers

The additional compute capacity allows Anthropic to improve capacity for paid subscribers by offering higher rate limits. Following the deal, Anthropic has doubled Claude Code limits for Pro, Enterprise, Max, and Team plans.

Anthropic boosts capacity for paid subscribers months after the company added multiple premium Claude features to its free-tier plan. The move allowed free plan users to access
AI tools like File Creation, Connectors, Skills, and Compaction. Previously, these tools were only accessible to Pro and Max plan subscribers.

The company has also removed peak hour limits on Claude Code for Max and Pro accounts. However, the weekly quota remains unchanged. Additionally, Anthropic is boosting Claude Opus API rate limits, raising maximum input tokens per minute for its highest tier to 10,000,000, up from 2,000,000. The maximum output tokens also shifted from 400,000 to 800,000

What Does the Compute Deal Mean for Anthropic?

Anthropic has been pursuing strategic partnership with compute capacity suppliers to meet its needs as demand for Claude Code from developers and enterprises continues to rise. Besides Amazon, the Claude maker has signed 5-gigawatt deals with Broadcom and Google. Compute capacity from these companies will be available to the AI firm starting 2027. Anthropic is also collaborating with Microsoft to access Azure capacity valued at about $30 billion.
