Anthropic is assembling a team to design custom chips for its Claude AI model. The company’s spokesperson confirmed the news about Anthropic’s plan to develop in-house chips. The AI firm will co-design the hardware and AI models to help Claude run faster and more efficiently. Anthropic is setting up an internal chip design team at a time when demand for its AI models continues to surge.

Why is Anthropic Building In-House Chips?

Developing in-house chips enables AI firms to reduce their dependence on leading chip manufacturers like Nvidia. It enables AI firms to customize their compute to suit the needs of their AI models. Using the custom AI chips, Anthropic aims to build dedicated infrastructure to run its Claude models more efficiently.

But the process of building AI chips internally can be costly and challenging. As Anthropic builds a silicon team, it plans to maintain a diversified hardware strategy where AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD play a key role in its scaling efforts.

The AI firm reportedly held talks with Samsung Electronics as its potential chip production partner. Anthropic joins a growing list of AI labs that are developing AI chips in-house. In June, OpenAI unveiled a custom chip called Jalapeño, which it developed in partnership with Broadcom.

Meta also teamed up with Broadcom earlier this year to develop its own AI chips, with production expected to start in September. The collaboration, which extends to 2029, is part of the social media firm’s wider strategy to develop multiple generations of custom AI chips.

Anthropic’s Plan to Attract Engineering Talent

Anthropic confirmed custom silicon chip design plans shortly after posting a job advert where it seeks to recruit engineers. The AI firm is looking to attract expertise across a wide range of chip design and verification fields.

According to the job postings, engineers are required to demonstrate hands-on ability to handle chip designs, from development to final production and shipment. Anthropic is offering engineers salaries that range from $320,000 to $485,000.

The engineer position, which lists a salary range of $320,000 – $485,000, says candidates must be able to demonstrate “direct personal contribution” to the finalization and shipping of semiconductor designs.

“This is a role for someone who has shipped silicon, has a realistic relationship with schedules, and is comfortable making consequential calls without a large organization behind them,” the company’s job listing read in part as per Business Insider.

What the Custom AI Chip Will Mean for Anthropic

Anthropic’s move to accelerate development of a custom chip reflects the company’s long-term plan to own AI infrastructure. Although the AI developer will continue to partner with major chip and cloud partners, in-house silicon could give it greater control, efficiency, and scalability. As AI competition accelerates, specialized hardware could become as critical as the models it powers.
