How Amazon’s $11.57B Globalstar Acquisition Rewired the Satellite Internet Race

  • Competition with Starlink intensifies in the low Earth orbit connectivity market
  • Globalstar Apple Emergency SOS partnership adds consumer device relevance

Amazon has agreed to acquire satellite operator Globalstar in an $11.57 billion agreement that strengthens its position in space-based communications. The deal represents a direct challenge to Starlink and expands Amazon’s ambitions in satellite connectivity.

The Amazon Globalstar acquisition is expected to accelerate its entry into commercial satellite broadband and enterprise services. The company already operates its Amazon Leo initiative, which focuses on low Earth orbit connectivity. The initiative was rebranded from Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo last year to emphasize enterprise connectivity priorities.

The acquisition also adds existing satellite infrastructure and operational experience to its portfolio.

What Amazon Actually Gets from the Globalstar Satellite Network

Under the agreement, Globalstar shareholders will receive either cash or Amazon stock, subject to valuation conditions and regulatory approval. The transaction values the company at $11.57 billion and marks one of Amazon’s largest space technology investment initiatives to date.

The Globalstar satellite network deal provides Amazon with immediate access to operational satellites, licensed spectrum, and established communication services.

This acquisition is positioned to reduce deployment timelines for its broader satellite strategy while supporting integration with existing infrastructure under the Amazon Leo program. Amazon has also secured regulatory momentum, including FCC approval for aspects of its satellite deployment plans.
The structure also allows for a phased transition depending on regulatory clearances and deployment milestones.

How the Globalstar Acquisition Shifts Amazon’s Position in the Satellite Race

According to Reuters, the deal intensifies competition between Amazon and SpaceX’s Starlink, which currently dominates the satellite internet market. Globalstar’s existing services include emergency communications and low-bandwidth data solutions used across commercial and safety applications.

The Globalstar Apple Emergency SOS partnership has also expanded its visibility in consumer devices, particularly through satellite-based emergency features on smartphones and wearables. Amazon aims to integrate these capabilities into its Amazon low Earth orbit satellite network, which is still under development but expected to scale significantly over the coming years. Analysts see rising global demand for satellite connectivity.

Cloud-Meets-Space Future

With increasing investment in satellite infrastructure, the sector is likely to see faster commercialization and expanded enterprise adoption. The deal also signals deeper convergence between cloud computing and space-based networks, as companies integrate connectivity with digital services and devices across global markets. It enhances long-term investment in space infrastructure.
