OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Group Chats to Supercharge Collaboration

In Focus

  • OpenAI has introduced a Group Chats feature on ChatGPT
  • The feature allows users to create groups and invite other users
  • The AI startup is piloting the feature in selected countries

OpenAI is bringing Group Chats to ChatGPT to facilitate conversations among friends, family, and co-workers. According to Mint, the AI startup has begun piloting the ChatGPT Group Chats feature with selected users.

New Feature Supports Collaboration on ChatGPT

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Group Chats feature allows users to create groups and invite other users for collaborative projects or use AI assistance in group conversations or decisions.

Whether you’re organizing a group dinner or drafting an outline with coworkers, ChatGPT can help. Group chats are separate from your private conversations, and your personal ChatGPT memory is never shared with anyone in the chat,” OpenAI stated on its website.

In the social media industry, AI-powered group chats are not entirely new. Meta has been implementing the idea by making Meta AI available in WhatsApp group chats. However, Meta uses interactions with Meta AI to personalize content and target ads.

OpenAI launches group chats in ChatGPT weeks after it unveiled the Sora 2 video generation model to take on TikTok and Instagram.

How OpenAI’s Group Chats Feature Works

On ChatGPT, the Group Chats feature can be used to share content like notes, articles, and questions. Users can ask the chatbot to summarize and organize this content.

To start a group chat, ChatGPT users have to tap the “people” icon on the top-right section of an existing chat.

When you join or create your first group chat, you’ll be asked to set up a short profile with your name, username, and photo so everyone knows who’s in the conversation,” OpenAI explained.

A tap on the “people” button generates a link that can be shared with other logged-in ChatGPT users. Both paid subscribers and free users can join the group by clicking the link. A single ChatGPT group chat invite link accommodates up to 20 users.

ChatGPT reacts to messages with emojis and reference profile pictures. OpenAI says the chatbot does not create a memory of conversations in group chats and that members can leave groups any time.

A Quick Summary of ChatGPT Group Features:

  • Group chats are separate from private conversations
  • A group can have up to 20 users
  • ChatGPT reacts to messages with emojis
  • OpenAI does not create memory of group conversations

In which Countries is ChatGPT Group Chats Feature Available?

ChatGPT’s Group Chats functionalities are currently available to ChatGPT Free, Go, Pro, and Plus subscribers in New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.

OpenAI says feedback from these countries will facilitate learning before the feature can be expanded to other regions in future. The AI startup says ChatGPT automatically activates sensitive content filters if an under-18 user joins a group chat.

Parents and guardians can use parental controls introduced in September 2025 to turn off the Group Chats feature entirely. Users can remove other participants from groups, except the initiator.
