Google is adding its AI assistant, Gemini, to its smart TV. According to Gadgets360, the tech giant is introducing Gemini AI for Google TV after integrating it with tablets, smartphones, smartwatches, and Workspace Apps. Gemini will bring AI features to Google TV, enabling users to search and discover new content fast and with ease.
While the AI chatbot replaces Google Assistant, users will still be able to perform all functions available in Google Assistant and access several new features.
“Today, we’re introducing Gemini for TV. Everything you already do with Google Assistant still works, but Gemini on Google TV goes beyond simple commands and lets you engage in free-flowing conversations with your big screen,” Google said in a statement posted on its website.
Currently, Gemini AI for Google TV is only available on the recently launched TCL QM9K series. However, the tech giant plans to integrate the AI-powered TV assistant into other TV models later this year. These models include TCL QM7K, QM8K, X11K, as well as 2025 Hisense U7, U8, and UX among others.
In August 2025, Google rolled out Gemini 2.5 Deep Think AI into the market. The advanced reasoning model is capable of exploring multiple solutions simultaneously and using the outputs to select the best answer.
Google says its AI assistant might help viewers with varying interests find common shows to watch or catch up with that they missed in a previous season. By enhancing movie suggestions on Google TV with AI, the tech giant ensures that users find the shows they want even when they can’t recall the title. Google TV AI can recommend shows, movies, and web series based on the mood of the user and their preferred genre.
“Get help finding the perfect show for whatever mood you’re in, brainstorm a family trip or answer complex homework questions. Just say “Hey Google” or press the microphone button on your TV remote to unlock a new world of possibilities.,” Google added in its statement.
Google adds that users can ask follow-up questions to learn more about movies or shows before watching. For instance, users can explore reviews or learn more about the cast to determine whether a movie or a show is worth watching.
Like any other AI chatbot, users can ask Gemini any question. For instance, parents and children can use the AI assistant to brainstorm ideas for school projects or find helpful answers with supporting YouTube videos for homework. Families could also use the AI agent to plan activities like vacations while individuals can use Gemini to learn new skills or engage in activities such as physical exercises.
Google TV gets an AI upgrade days after Google added Gemini AI to its Chrome browser for U.S. users. Addition of the AI assistant in the Chrome browser is aimed at boosting Google’s competitiveness as it takes on AI startups like Perplexity and OpenAI.
Google’s move to integrate AI in smart TV gives an early glimpse into how artificial intelligence will shape TV viewing experience in future. After investing billions of dollars in AI development, smart TV AI integration is one way that the tech giant is bringing AI into the different facets of people’s lives.
“This is a natural stepping stone to provide a more natural interface to talk to your TV, not only to find out what to watch, but to explore things in different ways. What we’ve launched with TCL is where we think the industry is going,” Vice President of TV at Google Shalini Govil-Pai said.
Govil-Pai believes that integration of Google’s AI-powered assistant in Smart TV paves the way for users to have more conversational interactions with their TVs. Besides responding to knowledge inquiries and recommending movies, Google envisions TVs that make travel and shopping content more accessible to viewers. The tech giant is also exploring ways for enabling viewers to make purchases related to the programs they watch.
Besides smart TVs, Google has a strong presence in the smartphone industry. In August 2025, the tech giant launched the Pixel 10 series AI-powered smartphones. The Pixel 10 series promises to change how people interact with their smartphones due to its ability to handle complex requests.
