The Indian government is making a significant advancement in its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure by announcing plans to establish 600 data labs and deploy 38,000 GPUs across the country. Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, revealed that the government plans to set up these 600 data labs strategically across states to enable seamless collaboration among academia, industry, and government bodies. The deployment of 38,000 GPUs is designed to significantly strengthen India’s computational capacity, catering to AI developers and researchers working on complex machine learning tasks. Earlier this year, Infosys co-founder, Nandan Nilekani shared thoughts on AI and India’s future.

The project falls under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) mandate, aligning with the broader goal of positioning India as a leader in emerging technologies. With the MeitY data labs India initiative, the government focuses on regional capacity building, particularly targeting Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to decentralize technology access.

The labs are expected to become operational over the next two years, with initial installations beginning in Q4 of 2025. Deployment is prioritized in regions with high academic concentration and industrial clusters to maximize the use of resources. The availability of affordable GPU access in India will also lower entry barriers for local businesses looking to adopt AI-driven solutions.
